Nonostante un budget di soli 50 milioni di dollari, il film fu un enorme successo al botteghino. Solo nel weekend di apertura la pellicola guadagnò ben 17 milioni di dollari, per poi incassarne, sempre negli Stati Uniti, quasi 154 milioni di dollari. Con quasi altri 120 milioni di dollari all'estero, la pellicola guadagnò complessivamente quasi 274 milioni di dollari, divenendo il nono film record di incassi del 1996 e il quarto maggior incasso cinematografico di un film drammatico-romantico di tutti i tempi.

Sinossi:

Si segue la storia di un brillante procuratore sportivo, Jerry (Tom Cruise), un uomo senza scrupoli che pensa esclusivamente alla carriera. Fidanzato con la giornalista Avery Bishop (Kelly Preston), crede che nella vita ci sia posto solo per guadagno e ambizione. Tutto cambia quando un giorno propone alla sua azienda di ridurre il numero di clienti per dedicare loro maggiore attenzione. Ai dirigenti l’idea non piace affatto e decidono così di licenziarlo in tronco. È allora che Jerry capisce che deve mettersi in proprio: l’unica che sceglie di seguirlo d’istinto è Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), un’impiegata dell'azienda, vedova e mamma di un bimbo piccolo.
La giovane donna è affascinata dal suo nuovo capo e si innamora subito di lui, anche se le cose non sembrano andare proprio nel verso giusto. Maguire, infatti, ha un unico cliente, il giocatore di football Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) per il quale però, nonostante il grande talento, non riesce a ottenere il rinnovo del contratto. La vita di Jerry va a rotoli e, dopo aver lasciato la sua fidanzata storica, comincia ad avvicinarsi sentimentalmente a Dorothy, che nel frattempo ha accettato un’altra proposta di lavoro ed è in procinto di trasferirsi. Jerry le chiede allora di sposarlo, ma si pente immediatamente del gesto perché, in cuor suo, sa che non è davvero innamorato di lei. Le loro vite prendono direzioni diverse, e Maguire torna in auge grazie al successo di Tidwell. Ma non riesce ad essere completamente felice…

Jerry Maguire è un procuratore sportivo senza scrupoli, ritenuto tra i più brillanti agenti della Sports Management International (SMI). Dopo una crisi di coscienza innescata dall'eccessivo stress e dalla falsità alla base dei rapporti umani che lo riguardano, scrive una relazione programmatica che prevede la riduzione del numero dei clienti a vantaggio di una maggior attenzione a ciascuno di essi. Tale gesto non piace ai suoi dirigenti, che subito lo licenziano.

Jerry si mette in proprio, seguito dalla sola Dorothy Boyd, giovane impiegata dell'azienda, già vedova e con un bimbo piccolo, innamorata di lui e della sua nuova etica lavorativa. Dei circa ottanta sportivi che seguiva all'interno della SMI, lo segue il solo Rod Tidwell, giocatore di football americano di grande talento, ma dalla personalità molto particolare. Isolato, Maguire fatica persino ad ottenere il rinnovo del contratto del suo unico cliente, innescando una spirale negativa che lo porta a un passo dal fallimento.

Intanto, dopo aver rotto con la sua fidanzata storica, incompatibile con la sua nuova presa di coscienza, Jerry si avvicina fatalmente a Dorothy. Quando lei, dopo aver accettato un'altra offerta di lavoro, sta per trasferirsi, nel frattempo Jerry le chiede di sposarlo. Per Dorothy è il coronamento di un sogno mentre Jerry, dopo che Rod con schiettezza lo fa riflettere sui suoi sentimenti, capisce che il suo non è vero amore; anche Dorothy, "svegliatasi dal sogno", preferisce prendersi una pausa di riflessione perché per lei un matrimonio non può fondarsi su affetto e riconoscenza.

Contemporaneamente grazie allo stimolo di Jerry, agente e ormai suo amico, Rod fa quel salto di qualità che tutti aspettavano e, nella partita più importante della stagione, sfodera una prestazione che lo impone all'attenzione generale. Il rinnovo del contratto arriva e a condizioni mai immaginate prima. Per Jerry è l'atteso rilancio, ma non è pienamente felice. Tornato da Dorothy le spiega che senza di lei non si sente completo, dichiarandole il suo amore, e così i due si riconciliano.

When a sports agent has a moral epiphany and is fired for expressing it, he decides to put his new philosophy to the test as an independent agent with the only athlete who stays with him and his former colleague.

Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a successful sports agent. The biggest clients, the respect, a beautiful fiancée, he has it all. Until one night he questions his purpose. His place in the world, and finally comes to terms with what's wrong with his career and life. Recording all of his thoughts in a mission statement, Jerry feels he has a new lease on life. Unfortunately his opinions aren't met with enthusiasm from his superiors and after dishonorably being stripped of his high earning clients and elite status within the agency, Jerry steps out into the sports business armed with only one volatile client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), and the only person with belief in his abilities, Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), with the impossible task of rebuilding what he once had. Along the way, he faces the harsh truth which he'd ignored in the past and a host of hardships that he'd never faced before.

Long Synopsis:

Jerry Maguire is a slick 35-year-old sports agent working for Sports Management International (SMI). After criticism from an injured player's son triggers a life-altering epiphany, he writes a mission statement about perceived dishonesty in the sports management business and his desire to work with fewer clients to produce a better, more caring personal relationship with them.

In response, SMI management sends Bob Sugar, Jerry's protégé, to fire him. This spurs both men to each call all of Jerry's clients to try to convince them not to hire the services of the other. Jerry speaks to Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell, one of his clients who is disgruntled with his contract. He needs a $10 million contract for his family to live on. Jerry informs him if he gets injured for the season, he will get no money from the Cardinals. Rod tests Jerry's resolve through a very long telephone conversation, during which Bob Sugar persuades the rest of Jerry's clients to stick with SMI.

Leaving the office, Jerry announces that he will start his own agency and asks if anyone will join him, to which only 26-year-old single mother Dorothy Boyd agrees. Frank "Cush" Cushman, a superstar quarterback prospect who expects to be the number one pick in the NFL Draft, initially also stays with Jerry after he makes a visit to the Cushman home. However, Sugar persuades Cushman and his father to sign with SMI over Jerry the night before the draft.

After an argument Jerry breaks up with his disgruntled fiancée Avery. He then turns to Dorothy, becoming closer to her young son, Ray, and starts a romantic relationship with her. Dorothy contemplates moving to San Diego as she has a secure job offer there; however, she and Jerry then decide to get married.

Jerry concentrates all his efforts on Rod, now his only client, who turns out to be very difficult to satisfy. Over the next several months, the two direct harsh criticism towards each other with Rod insisting that Jerry is not trying hard enough to get him a contract while Jerry contends that Rod is not proving himself worthy of the money for which he demands; one point of contention is that Rod is not very likable and comes across as aloof to the fans.

Rod takes Jerry's advice to prove he is worthy of his contract. He is playing well and his team is winning. Jerry's marriage with Dorothy deteriorates as she notices he seems crazier about Ray than her, so they separate.

During a December Monday Night Football game between the Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys, Rod plays well but appears to receive a serious injury when catching a winning touchdown, securing a spot for the Cardinals in the playoffs. He recovers and dances for the wildly cheering crowd.

Afterwards, Jerry and Rod embrace in front of other athletes and sports agents and show how their relationship has progressed from a strictly business one to a close personal one, which was one of the points Jerry made in his mission statement. He then flies back home to meet Dorothy, telling her that he loves her and wants her in his life, which she reciprocates.

Rod appears on Roy Firestone's sports show. Unbeknownst to him, Jerry has secured him an $11.2 million contract with the Cardinals, allowing him to finish his pro football career in Arizona. The emotional Rod proceeds to thank everyone and extends warm gratitude to Jerry. Jerry speaks with several other pro athletes, some of whom have read his earlier mission statement and respect his work with Rod. Ray throws a baseball in the air which surprises Jerry. He then speaks of Ray's possible future sports industry career with Dorothy.
