Sinossi:

Rebecca (Eva Green) e Tommy (Matt Smith) hanno una tenera storia d’amore infantile. Molti anni dopo si incontrano di nuovo e la loro attrazione è più forte che mai. Il fuoco della loro passione è però di breve durata, perché Tommy muore in un incidente stradale, travolto da un camion proprio davanti agli occhi di Rebecca. La ragazza, straziata dal dolore e incapace di vivere senza di lui, si rivolge al controverso «Dipartimento di replicazione genetica» per farsi impiantare in grembo il clone di Tommy, per poi crescerlo come un figlio. La vita con il piccolo Tommy è colma di gioie e piccoli miracoli. Nell’isolamento di una piccola località costiera, Rebecca si dedica anima e corpo a questa esistenza 'a due'. Con il passare degli anni, Rebecca non potrà sfuggire alle complesse implicazioni della sua decisione. Per quanto tempo ancora potrà tenere nascosta la verità a Tommy e ai vicini ficcanaso? Riuscirà a proteggerlo dai pregiudizi della gente nei confronti dei cloni? Quando raggiungerà l’età in cui sarà la copia esatta del compianto amato, come gli spiegherà l’insorgere di sentimenti che lui non potrà capire? Le risposte sopraggiungono mentre lei si prepara a raccogliere i frutti dolci-amari del sogno di una vita.

Commento critico (a cura di JEANNETTE CATSOULIS, The New York Times)

No amount of therapy could fix the central characters in “Womb,” a morally ripe science-fiction tale remodeled as shockingly inert love story. If the 20-odd seconds of blank screen squatting pointlessly amid the opening credits aren’t enough warning that you’re in for some seriously sluggish storytelling, then the adoption of a snail as one of the central motifs should drive the point home.

Filmed in Germany on the North Sea coast, the story plays out in an indeterminate time when cloning is apparently commonplace, even if its fruits are treated like outcasts. It’s difficult to know, because we’re trapped for the duration on a windswept beach where Rebecca (Eva Green) has reunited with Tommy (Matt Smith, the latest incarnation of the Doctor in “Doctor Who”), the childhood sweetheart she left a dozen years earlier. A few minutes of screen time and one road accident later, Tommy is no more, and

Rebecca has been artificially impregnated with her expired lover’s tissue.

What follows is a deeply weird study of psychosexual obsession that, backed by Peter Szatmari’s ravishingly salty photography, could have evolved into a fecund exploration of biological ethics. Instead we’re confined to a beach shack where Rebecca and Tommy 2.0 — soon full grown though his mother never ages a day — share pregnant silences and awkward physical contact. She’s such a cipher, and her motives so lubricious, that we want to shake her.

Unlike Jonathan Glazer’s similarly themed and hugely superior “Birth” (2004) — a genuinely creepy dive into lost love and unyielding heartache — this stagnant drama from the Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf fizzles. But if you have a son approaching 30 who needs a swift kick out of the nest, by all means buy him a ticket. He’ll be gone before you can say, “Oedipus.”
