(DBE) Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, meglio conosciuta come Dame Maggie Smith, e’ l’attrice inglese cinematografica, televisiva e teatrale che ha vinto per due volte il Premio 'Academy Award', vincitrice dell’Emmy.
Smith e’ la figlia di Nathaniel Smith, un patologo della sanita’ pubblica che lavorava alla Oxford University, e di Margaret Hutton Little. Ha due fratelli gemelli maggiori, Alistair e Ian. Smith ha studiato alla Oxford High School anche se e’ stato riferito che a lei l’esperienza non era piaciuta.
Smith ha avuto un’ampia carriera sia sullo schermo che in teatro ed e’ conosciuta come una delle preminenti attici inglesi. Ha iniziato la sua carriera alla Oxford Playhouse insieme a Frank Shelley, ed ha interpretato il suo primo film nel 1956. nel 1969 ha vinto il premio Oscar come 'Migliore Attrice Protagonista' per il suo ruolo di insegnante poco ortodossa nel film La strana voglia di Jean. Nel 1978 le fu consegnato il Premio Oscar quale 'Miglior Attrice Non Protagonista' per il ruolo della fragile attrice Diana Barrie, nel film California Suite, dove recitava insieme a Michael Caine. Dopo ques’episodio, Caine sembra che abbia telefonato, per fare uno scherzo, a Michael Palin dopo aver sentito che Palin avrebbe fatto un film, Il missionario appunto, con la Smith, avvertendolo che lei gli avrebbe rubato le scene.
Smith ha recitato nel 1993 nel film Sister Act, una svitata in abito da suora e nel 1999 nel film Un te’ con Mussolini, dove interpreta la formidabile Lady Hester. Senza dubbio molti dei suoi ruoli in eta’ piu’ matura sono centrati su quello che Smith dice, facendo una comica auto critica, essere una “galleria del grottesco” e certamente sia i suoi registi che il suo pubblico amano vederla recitare i ruoli di pungente, bisbetica, sarcastica e semplicemente scortese; e’ infatti a suo favore che lei ha donato una carica di umanità e vulnerabilità a personaggi cosi poco simpatici, cosa che pochi attori avrebbero saputo fare. Esempi recenti di questo includono la sorella sempre pronta a giudicare nel film Ladies in Lavander e la testarda snob in Gosford Park per la quale ricevette un’altra Nomination all’Oscar.
Altri ruoli degni di nota includono la lamentevole Charlotte Bartlerr nella produzione Merchant-Ivory di Camera con vista ed un vivace sostegno nell’anziana Duchessa di York nel film di Ian McKellen Riccardo III. Dato l’internazionale successo dei film della serie di Harry Potter, e’ ampiamente conosciuta nel ruolo della Professoressa Minerva McGranitt che interpreta, appunto, nei film di Harry Potter. Per tutta la durata della sua carriera e’ stata ammirata per la sua eccezionale tecnica, sia sullo schermo che sul palco. Ha l’abilita’ di proiettare una profondità di emozioni sia nei ruoli comici che in quelli drammatici, il tutto ben equilibrato da un’innata riserva che combina un aspetto dal controllo d’acciaio ed una goccia di isterismo. Fuori dal palcoscenico e’ una persona molto riservata. Per la schiera immensa di devoti ammiratori lei e’ la piu’ grande attrice sia in film che al teatro con uno stile peculiare come nessun altro; e’ stato durante gli anni 1970 che si trasferì in Canada alla ricerca di un nuovo regista sia per la sua vita artistica quanto per quella privata dal momento che era reduce dal divorzio.
Sul palcoscenico, i suoi molteplici ruoli spaziano da la protagonista della produzione di Alan Bennett Lady in the Van, fino ad intepretare Peter Pan. Ha anche interpretato Wendy nell’adattazione cinematografica in Capitan Uncino. Ha vinto un Premio 'Tony Award' nel 1990 quale 'Migliore Attrice' in una commedia per Lettice and Lovage, dove interpretava un’eccentrica guida turistica inglese.
E’ stata insignita del 'Commander of the Order of the British Empire' (CBE) nel 1970 e fu innalzata a 'Dame Commander' (DBE) nel 1990.
E’ stata sposata due volte. Sposo’ Robert Stephens il 29 Giugno 1967, al Greenwich Registry Office e da questa unione sono nati due figli: l’attore Chris Larkin (nato nel 1967) e Toby Stephens (nato 1969). Il divorzio avvenne il 6 maggio 1974.
Ha sposato Beverly Cross il 23 agosto 1975 a Guildford Registry Office ed il matrimonio e’ finito con la morte di Cross il 20 marzo 1998. Al momento della sua morte Smith stava recitando ne A delicate Balance al 'Theatre Royal' in Haymarket e con la sua caratteristica forza d’animo ha continuato fino alla fine delle serate.

Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, (DBE), better known as Dame Maggie Smith, is a two-time Academy Award, and Emmy-winning English film, stage, and television actress.
Smith is the daughter of Nathaniel Smith, public health pathologist who worked at Oxford University, and Margaret Hutton Little. She has two older twin brothers, Alistair and Ian. Smith studied at Oxford High School although she has been quoted as having not enjoyed the experience.
Smith has had an extensive career on both screen and in live theatre and is known as one of Britain's pre-eminent actresses. She started her career at the Oxford Playhouse with Frank Shelley, and made her first film in 1956. In 1969 she won the 'Academy Award for Best Actress' for her role as an unorthodox Scottish schoolteacher in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She was also awarded the 1978 'Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress' for her role as the brittle actress, Diana Barrie, in California Suite acting opposite Michael Caine. Afterwards, Caine is supposed to have humorously telephoned Michael Palin on hearing that Palin was about to embark on a film (The Missionary) with Smith, warning him she would steal the film .
Smith appeared in Sister Act in 1992, and had a major role in the 1999 film Tea With Mussolini where she appeared as the formidable Lady Hester. Indeed, many of her more mature roles have centred on what Smith self-mockingly refers to as her "gallery of grotesques", and indeed both her directors and her audiences love to see her playing waspish, sarcastic or plain rude characters; it is to her credit that she bestows such unsympathetic roles with a humanity and vulnerability which lesser actors could not. Recent examples of this would include the judgemental sister in Ladies in Lavender and the cantankerous snob in Gosford Park for which she received yet another Oscar nomination.
Other notable roles include the querulous Charlotte Bartlett in the Merchant-Ivory production of A Room with a View and a vivid supporting turn as the aged Duchess of York in Ian McKellen's film of Richard III. Given the international success of the Harry Potter movies, she is widely known in the role of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films.
Throughout her career, Smith has been admired for her remarkable technique, on both stage and screen. She has the ability to project a quality of deep emotion whether comic or tragic, balanced by an innate reserve that combines the appearance of steely control and a hint of something approaching hysteria. Off stage, however, she is sometimes perceived as a reserved and private person. To her legion of devoted and sometimes fanatical admirers, however, she is one of the great actresses of film and theatre with an idiosyncratic style quite unlike anyone else; it was during the 1970s that she moved to Canada to find a new direction in both her art and in her personal life as she had recently become divorced.
On stage, her many roles include the title character in the stage production of Alan Bennett's Lady in the Van and starring as Peter Pan in J. M. Barrie's fairytale story Peter Pan. She later played Wendy in the Peter Pan adaption Hook. She won a 'Tony Award' in 1990 for 'Best Actress in a Play' for Lettice and Lovage, starring as an eccentric tour guide in an English stately home.
She was awarded 'Commander of the Order of the British Empire' (CBE) in 1970, and was raised to 'Dame Commander' (DBE) in 1990.
Smith has been married twice. She married Robert Stephens on 29 June 1967, at the Greenwich Registry office and had two sons with him: actors Chris Larkin (born 1967) and Toby Stephens (born 1969). They divorced on 6 May 1974.
She married Beverly Cross (on 23 August 1975 at Guildford Registry Office) and the marriage ended with his death on 20 March 1998. At the time of his death she was appearing in A Delicate Balance at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket yet with characteristic fortitude she continued to the end of the run.
