'Blade Runner 2049': Will the Deckard Question Be Answered? Ridley Scott is on record saying it was previously made clear

20/12/2016 - Well? Is he one of them or not? Part of the fun that is the 1982 classic Blade Runner is debating whether Rick Deckard is in fact a Replicant, similar to the Tyrell Corporation Nexus-6 models he pursues and retires. 

With the release of the first trailer for the sequel, Blade Runner 2049 (which looks epic — is that the same gun Deckard had in the original?), this debate will likely be kicked into high gear. 

The original theatrical cut of the 1982 film left this question ambiguous, but additional versions, such as director Ridley Scott's cut, point to yes, Deckard is one of them. Still, this might all be up in the air.

Director Denis Villeneuve reportedly told the French website Allocine in a recent interview that the answer to the question will "not necessarily" be made blatantly obvious in the new film starring Ford, Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright and Ana de Armas. But, is it a moot point, anyway? Scott has made it clear in past interviews that in his opinion, Deckard is a Replicant, and he made that known in the alternate cuts of the film with the unicorn (check out a deep dive on the unicorn's significance here). 

It will be interesting to see if die-hard fans of the original accept an answer, if it is given, or if they will hold tight to their personal theories.  Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 is set to open Oct. 6, 2017. Alcon Entertainment is producing the film and owns the rights to the franchise. Sony Pictures is co-financing the movie and distributing it internationally.
