- ABBAS KIAROSTAMI IN JAPAN
Winner of the Palme d’Or in 1997 for Taste of Cherry, the Iranian director is IN COMPETITION at CANNES for the fourth time in his career. In LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE, ABBAS KIAROSTAMI transports us to Tokyo, far from the poetry of Persia and the ochre deserts of Iran.
Certain encounters change lives forever. LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE examines the bonds between two beings that everything in life separates: Takeshi, an elderly academic, set in his ways, and Akiko, who has to sell her charms to pay her way through university. LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE is the second film by ABBAS KIAROSTAMI to be made outside Iran.
The Iranian director waited for his thirty-ninth movie to plant his camera outside the frontiers of his native land. He shot CERTIFIED COPY in Italy with European actors, winning the BEST ACTRESS AWARD PRIZE for JULIETTE BINOCHE at Cannes in 2010. “I don’t think that shooting the movie in Italy changed anything in my artistic approach”, said the director at the time. “I wanted the characters to be universal.”
This time ABBAS KIAROSTAMI has refined his ambition to make a film bereft of specifically western references, shooting in JAPAN, among urban backdrops and with Japanese actors. On the screen, the couple is played by Rin Takanashi, a rising star of Japanese cinema, and Tadashi Okuno, an actor more used to working in theatre and TV.
KIAROSTAMI is one of the directors who initiated the Iranian new wave despite the censorship imposed by the government in the 1970s. He had to deal with severe restrictions, and overcome them, to develop a style that is rich in symbols yet shot through with realism, often at the edge of non-fiction. Until 2010, he had never worked outside Iran where he painted a finely balanced picture of his country and its new society.
The film will be screened on Monday 21 May at 11.30 am and 10 pm in the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
