Figlia dell’attore Will Knightley e della sceneggiatrice Sharman Macdonald, KEIRA (Kiera) Christina KNIGHTLEY manifesta la sua precoce passione per il cinema quando, a soli sei anni, come regalo di compleanno fa richiesta di un agente personale. Fa dunque, proprio all’età di sei anni, la sua prima comparsa nel dramma televisivo Royal Celebration (1993) di Ferdinand Fairfax. Il vero inizio nel mondo della recitazione si verifica quando di anni ne compie nove, con il tv-movie Village Affair (1994) seguito da numerose apparizioni in trascurabili produzioni televisive: Innocent Lies (1995), The Bill (1995) e nei telefilm Treasure Seekers (1996) e Coming Home Princess of Thieves (1998) della Disney. Tra le miniserie Keira Knightley interpreta inoltre Oliver Twist (1999) e l’adattamento del romanzo di Boris Pasternak nella miniserie di Giacomo Compitoti, Il dottor Zivago (2002), in cui riveste il ruolo di Lara, accanto a Hans Mathelson.
Il primo importante ruolo cinematografico, per quanto piccolo, di Keira Knightley è quello di Sabè in Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace (Guerre stellari Episodio I - La minaccia fantasma, 1999) di George Lucas.
E’ il grande successo di pubblico riscosso in Inghilterra dalla commedia di Gurinder Chadha, Bend It Like Beckham (Sognando Beckham, 2002), per il quale vince il ‘London Critics Circle Award’ come ‘Miglior Attrice Esordiente dell’anno’, a portare Keira Knightley alla notorietà. In seguito viene scelta dal regista Gore Verbinski e dal produttore Jerry Bruckheimer per interpretare il ruolo della volitiva Elizabeth Swann al fianco di Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom e Jeoffrey Rush nel blockbuster mondiale d’avventura, campione d’incassi del 2003, Pirates of the Carabbean: The Course of the Black Pearl (La maledizione della prima luna). Film che segna il suo esordio hollywoodiano. Da allora interpreterà lo stesso ruolo altre due volte, nei sequel del filmPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (Pirati dei Caraibi: la maledizione del forziere fantasma, 2006) e Pirates of the Caribbean: World’s End (Pirati dei Caraibi: ai confini del mondo, 2007), rivelandosi come una delle attrici più promettenti e versatili nell’universo in celluloide di nuova generazione, al punto da essere indicata da molti - forse con un eccesso di entusiastico apprezzamento critico - come la nuova Julia Roberts.
Tra i suoi film successivi si ricordano The Hole (2001), Pure (2002) di Gillies Mackinnon e il Kolossal di ambientazione medievale King Arthur (2004), di Antoine Fuqua e prodotto da Jerry Bruckheimer, nel quale Keira Knightley interpreta un’insolita Ginevra, riscuotendo un discreto successo personale, a dispetto del flop del film al box-office. Le viene affidato inoltre il ruolo di Juliet all’interno di un cast corale nell’ultima commedia romantica di Richard Curtis Love Actually (L’amore davvero, 2003), per la Working Title Films. Qui difatti la Knightley affianca Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy ed Emma Thompson. Di seguito la Knightley è pure nel cast del thriller di John Maybury The Jacket (2005), dove interpreta la misteriosa Jakie al fianco di Adrien Brody, mentre veste i panni di Domino Harvey, una cacciatrice di taglie, nel thriller action di Tony Scott Domino (2005).
Oggi, a soli ventuno anni, Keira Kneghtley è già una star che vanta Nomination all’Oscar e al Golden Globe come ‘Migliore Attrice’ per la sua apprezzata performance di Elizabeth Bennet (Lizzie), sua prima prova da protagonista assoluta, in Pride & Prejudice (Orgoglio e Pregiudizio, 2005), adattamento cinematografico dell’omonimo romanzo di Jane Austen, diretto da Joe Wright, lo stesso regista di Atonement (Espiazione, 2007). Quest’ultimo è il film di apertura, in concorso, alla 64° Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica al Lido di Venezia, in cui la Knightley interpreta Cecilia Tallis, a fianco di James McAvoy e Vanessa Redgrave, sul drammatico sfondo della II Guerra Mondiale nell’Inghilterra del 1935.
Di prossima distribuzione l’adattamento del best seller di Alessandro Baricco, Seta, Silk (Seta, 2007), per la regia di Francois Girard, con Michael Pitt, Alfred Molina e Koji Yakusho.
Oltre la soglia della celluloide, la Knightley è stata scelta come nuovo volto di Mademoiselle Coco, per Chanel. Questa occasione segna la sua terza collaborazione con Joe Wright che ritroviamo nel ruolo di scrittore e regista della pubblicità del noto marchio francese.
Tra le riprese cinematografiche più recenti per Keira Knighley c’è il film The Edge of Love (2008) di John Maybury, con Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy e Matthew Rhys, tratto dalla storia dell’improbabile amicizia fra l’ex fidanzata di Dylan Thomas e sua moglie Xaitlin. Sharman Mcdonald, la madre sceneggiatrice della Knightley, ha scritto il copione del film.

Born to Will Knightley an English theatre and television actor and to Sharman Macdonald, a Scottish award-winning playwright KEIRA CHRISTINA KNIGHTLEY shows her willing to act at the young age of six when, as birthday present, she asked for an agent. Knightley began acting at age seven in her television debut in Royal Celebration (1993) by Ferdinand Fairfax. In 1994, at the age of nine, she plays in a TV-movie Village Affair; which follows several minor roles in different TV productions as Innocent Lies (1995) The Bill (1995) and in the mini-series Treasure Seekers (1996) and a made-for-television Walt Disney Production feature Princess of Thieves (2001). During this time, Knightley also appeared in a mini-series adaptation of Doctor Zhivago (2002) as Lara, besides Hans Mathelson. The first important role, even though a small one, for Knightley was Sabe’ in Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) by George Lucas.
But Knightley’s breakthrough role was in the English football-themed film Bend It Like Beckham(2002) which awarded her the 'London Critics Circle Award' in the 'British Newcomer of the Year' category. Afterwards she was cast by director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer for the role of the strong-willed Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Course of the Black Pearl (2003) along with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. She’s been cast for the same role two more times for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and Pirate of the Caribbean: World’s End (2007) and for this she’s been acclaimed as the new Julia Roberts because she’s been seeing as one of the most versatile and promising actresses in the celluloid’s universe. Among her successes it’s worth to cite The Hole (2001); Pure (2001) by Gillies Mackinnon and the medieval setting King Arthur (2004) by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, where Knightley plays an unusual Guinevere. In 2003 Knightley is cast as Juliet for Love Actually a romantic British comedy along with Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson. In 2005 we can see Knightley as the mysterious Jakie in The Jacket a thriller by John Maybury along with Adrien Brody; while portrayed Harvey, a bounty hunter, in the action/thriller Domino (2005) by Tony Scott. Today at only twenty-one-year-old Knightley is a star that is an Oscar-nominated actress and she’s been nominated for a Golden globe for her performance as Elizabeth Bennet (Lizzie) in Pride & Prejudice (2205) her first starring role ever; movie directed by Joe Wright and based on Jane Austen novel. Joe Wright directed also Atonement (2007) film screened as the opening at the 64th Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica in Venice where Knightley plays Cecilia Tallis, along to James McAvoy and Vanessa Redgrave, set at the time of WWII in England, around 1935. In Knightley future is Silk (2007) by Francois Girard, along with Michael Pitt, Alfred Molina and Koji Yakusho and adaptation of the best seller by Alessandro Baricco.
Besides movies, Knightley as been chosen as the spokeswoman for Chanel, as the new Mademoiselle Coco. This new avenue underlines her collaboration with Joe Wright, who’s the writer and director for the campaign for this well-known French brand. Right now Knightley is working in a film by John Maybury with Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys, Edge of Love (2008) based on the unlikely friendship between the ex-fiancée and the wife of Dylan Thomas. Sharman Mcdonald, Knightley’s mother, has written the script.
