Sinossi:
Michael Myers è recluso nel manicomio di Smith's Grove dal 1963, quando ad appena 6 anni uccise a coltellate la sorella Judith. Dopo 15 anni fugge approfittando di un trasferimento. Il dottor Sam Loomis, lo psichiatra che lo prese in cura in seguito all'omicidio, intuisce subito la sua destinazione: Haddonfield, città natale. All'alba del 31 ottobre, Michael uccide un meccanico, ruba i suoi vestiti e fa ritorno alla sua casa natale, ora fatiscente e in vendita. L'omicida prende di mira la giovane Laurie Strode e le sue amiche, che pedina di ritorno da scuola.
Intanto il dottor Loomis arriva a Haddonfield. Lo psichiatra avverte della pericolosità di Myers lo sceriffo locale, il quale però non sembra dargli credito. Quella sera, Laurie ed Annie vanno a fare le babysitter da due bambini, Anna a Lindsey Wallace, mentre Laurie deve badare a Tommy Doyle. Durante la sera Myers spia Annie attraverso la finestra della casa dei Wallace. Più tardi Annie riceve una chiamata dal suo fidanzato Paul, il quale vuole passare la serata con lei. Annie porta Lindsey dall'altro lato della strada e l'affida a Laurie e poi va alla sua auto trovandola stranamente aperta. Annie entra in auto e viene strangolata da Myers, che poi la finisce tagliandole la gola. Tommy vede Michael portare il corpo di Annie dentro casa e pensa che si tratti dell'Ombra della strega. Laurie lo tranquillizza e lo manda a letto.
Lynda giunge alla casa dei Wallace insieme al fidanzato Bob Simms. Approfittando del fatto che la casa è vuota i due salgono in una camera di sopra e hanno un rapporto sessuale. Subito dopo Bob scende in cucina per prendersi una birra e qui viene attaccato ed ucciso da Myers. Salito in camera da letto, Michael strangola Lynda con la corda del telefono mentre questa stava telefonando a Laurie. Laurie, preoccupata per l'interrompersi della telefonata, esce e si reca alla casa dei Wallace per indagare. Qui scopre i cadaveri di Annie, Lynda e Bob e la lapide di Judith Myers, che era stata trafugata dal cimitero. Mentre Laurie, inorridita, sta andandosene via, Myers l'aggredisce ferendola con il coltello.
Laurie cade dalle scale e fugge dalla casa facendo ritorno in casa dei Doyle. Michael riesce ad entrare nella casa, ma Laurie gli conficca un ferro da maglia nel collo. Laurie corre quindi di sopra per controllare che i bambini stiano bene, ma Michael è sopravvissuto e l'ha seguita. Laurie si chiude dentro un armadio e quando Michael riesce ad aprirne la porta, lei lo colpisce con una gruccia e poi col coltello che egli stesso ha perduto nella colluttazione.
Uscita dall'armadio, Laurie dice ai bambini di scappare e di andare a chiamare la polizia. Il dottor Loomis vede i due bambini fuggire terrorizzati dalla casa e, intuito che Michael è al suo interno, decide di entrarvi. Nel frattempo Myers si rialza ed attacca Laurie intenzionato ad ucciderla. Fortunatamente per lei Loomis arriva in tempo e spara sei colpi a Michael, che cade dal balcone e rimane a terra apparentemente morto. Loomis si affaccia dal balcone per rivedere il killer, ma Michael è scomparso.
Storyline:
On the night of Halloween, 1963, in the suburban Illinois town of Haddonfield, six-year-old Michael Myers brutally stabs his teenage sister Judith to death with a chef's knife. Fifteen years later, his psychiatrist Dr. Samuel Loomis drives with nurse Marion Chambers to the sanitarium where Michael is incarcerated to escort him to a court hearing. After Loomis exits their car to unlock the main gate, Michael jumps on the roof and attacks Marion. She runs from the vehicle, allowing Michael to steal the car and drive away.
As Michael makes his way to Haddonfield, he kills a mechanic and takes his coveralls before stealing a white mask from a hardware store. He then begins stalking a teenage girl, Laurie Strode, whom he had seen drop off a key at his abandoned childhood home that her father is trying to sell. Laurie starts to notice Michael throughout the day, but her friends Annie Brackett and Lynda Van Der Klok dismiss her concerns. Loomis arrives in Haddonfield and discovers that Michael has stolen Judith's tombstone from the local cemetery. He meets up with the town sheriff, Annie's father Leigh Brackett, and they search for Michael.
That night, Michael follows Annie and Laurie to their babysitting jobs. Laurie watches Tommy Doyle, while Annie stays with Lindsey Wallace across the street. Michael spies on Annie and kills the Wallace family dog. Tommy spots Michael from the windows and thinks he is the boogeyman, but Laurie dismisses his story. Annie takes Lindsey to the Doyle house so she can pick up her boyfriend while Laurie watches both of the kids. Michael hides in her car and strangles her before cutting her throat. Lynda and her boyfriend Bob arrive at the Wallace house and have sex. Bob then goes downstairs to get a beer from the kitchen, where Michael pins him to the wall with a chef's knife. Michael poses as Bob in a ghost costume to taunt Lynda, who teases him to no effect. Annoyed, she calls Laurie to find out what happened to Annie, but Michael strangles her to death with the phone cord while Laurie listens on the other end, not knowing what is happening. Meanwhile, Loomis discovers the stolen car and searches the streets.
Worried by the phone call, Laurie goes to the Wallace house and finds her friends' bodies and Judith's tombstone in one of the upstairs bedrooms. She runs into the hallway cowering in fear where Michael slashes her arm, causing her to fall over the banister. Dazed and injured, she escapes the house and flees down the street with Michael in pursuit. She makes it back to the Doyle house and tries to call for help, only to find the phone dead. Michael sneaks in through the window and attacks her again, but she stabs him in the neck with a knitting needle.
Thinking Michael is dead, Laurie staggers upstairs to check on the children. Michael reappears, while Tommy and Lindsey hide in the bathroom, Laurie lures Michael to the bedroom closet, and Laurie stabs him in the eye and in the chest. After sending Tommy and Lindsey to a nearby neighbor's house to call the police, Michael rises again. Seeing the kids running from the house, Loomis investigates and sees Michael strangling Laurie. Loomis shoots him with a revolver, causing him to stagger backward and fall off the balcony. When Loomis goes to check on the body, he is unsurprised to see that Michael has vanished. He stares into the distance as a traumatized Laurie sobs in terror while Michael's breathing can be heard in the Haddonfield night.
