Joseph (Tom Cruise) e Shannon (Nicole Kidman) sono due giovani irlandesi con un unico sogno: possedere e coltivare un po' di terra. Ma la situazione in Irlanda non è delle migliori, così decidono di partire per l'America e ricominciare tutto da capo. I due appartengono a due classi sociali differenti, arrivati a Boston, Joseph intraprende la carriera nella boxe. Alla fine decidono di partire per l'Oklahoma, dove con tanti sacrifici realizzeranno i propri sogni e Joseph riuscirà a conquistare il proprio pezzo di terra e a dichiarare il suo amore a Shannon.
IN DETTAGLIO:
Nell'Irlanda, alla fine dell'800, i contadini affittuari dei terreni si ribellano agli onerosi canoni e agli sfratti, imposti dal ricchi proprietari, come Daniel Christie, che vivono lontani nelle loro tenute e non hanno mai visto le terre che possiedono. Durante una sommossa, il vecchio Donelly viene ferito a morte ma, prima di spirare, esorta il figlio minore, Joseph, a conquistarsi una terra; gli uomini di Christie, guidati dal giovane ed ambizioso Stephen, che aspira a sposare Shannon, la bella figlia del proprietario, hanno bruciato la povera casa dei Donelly durante il funerale del padre, e i compaesani spingono Joseph ad uccidere Daniel Christie per vendicarsi e gli danno un fucile. Ma Joseph non sa sparare, e, giunto alla lontana villa dei Christie, viene ferito e catturato, però ottiene la simpatia sia di Shannon che di suo padre, anche se la ragazza finge di disprezzarlo. Poichè l'ereditiera non vuole accettare il convenzionale futuro che i genitori le preparano, fugge con Joseph per raggiungere l'America...
SYNOPSIS:
A young man (Cruise) leaves Ireland with his landlord's daughter (Kidman) after some trouble with her father, and they dream of owning land at the big giveaway in Oklahoma ca. 1893. When they get to the new land, they find jobs and begin saving money. The man becomes a local barehands boxer, and rides in glory until he is beaten, then his employers steal all the couple's money and they must fight off starvation in the winter, and try to keep their dream of owning land alive. Meanwhile, the woman's parents find out where she has gone and have come to America to find her and take her back.
