Ormai stanco della sua spietata professione di mercenario, Danny si ritira in luogo privato, lontano dalle brutalità commesse e alla ricerca di una serenità mai avuta precedentemente. Quando però scopre che Hunter è prigioniero del sultano dell’Oman, abbandona tutto per salvarlo. Il costo della vita dell’amico è molto alto. Per liberarlo, infatti, dovrà accettare un compito molto difficile: vendicare la morte dei figli del sultano, uccisi per mano di alcuni ex membri dei SAS (Servizi Aerei Speciali Britannici) durante la segreta Guerra dell’Oman. L’impresa si complica ulteriormente quando Danny scopre che i suoi bersagli sono protetti da una squadra clandestina di uomini spietati: i “Feather Menâ€, capitanati da Spike (Clive Owen), ex SAS assetato di combattere una nuova guerra. Regno Unito, 1980. Danny Bryce è un killer (presumibilmente ex soldato delle forze speciali) che, insieme al suo mentore e amico Hunter e ad un ristretto gruppo di fedelissimi, uccide persone su commissione.
Dopo aver ucciso un uomo davanti a un bambino ed essere rimasto ferito ad un braccio durante la fuga, Danny, segnato profondamente da quella esperienza, decide di cambiare vita e si ritira in Australia, suo paese natale, dove va a vivere in una fattoria assieme a una vecchia compagna di scuola, Anne Frazier.
Un anno dopo però Hunter viene fatto prigioniero da uno sceicco tribale in Oman e Danny, per il legame d'amicizia, si sente costretto a tornare in azione. Per liberarlo, infatti, dovrà accettare un compito molto difficile: vendicare la morte dei figli dello sceicco, uccisi per mano di alcuni ex membri del SAS (Special Air Service; forze speciali dell'esercito britannico) durante la segreta guerra del Dhofar. Se ci riuscirà gli verranno corrisposti 6 milioni di dollari, ma in caso contrario, Hunter sarà giustiziato.
Danny perciò si riunisce ai vecchi compagni, Davies e Meier, promettendo loro 3 milioni di dollari a testa, rinunciando alla sua parte della ricompensa dello sceicco. Raggiungono il primo obiettivo, Steven Harris. L'ex membro del SAS viene assassinato con un martello ricoperto dallo stesso rivestimento del pavimento della doccia, facendolo così sembrare un incidente. Una misteriosa organizzazione segreta, gli "uomini piuma", si intromette; infatti è costituita da ex militari che continuano a proteggere i loro commilitoni in congedo. Un membro dell'organizzazione è Spike Logan, un veterano del SAS che perse un occhio proprio in Oman e che viene incaricato di indagare sull'accaduto.
Lasciato l'Oman, i tre si recano nei pressi di Londra, in un luogo dove vengono addestrati i militari, dove raggiungono il loro secondo obiettivo, Cregg. Danny, infiltratosi tra i soldati, somministra a Cregg caffeina e insulina sciogliendoli nel tè, che lo faranno morire per assideramento, facendo sembrare anche questo un incidente, durante un'esercitazione militare.
L'ultimo obiettivo, Simon McCann, è un mercenario scaricato dal SAS dopo un attentato che lo ha reso instabile di mente. Provocando un incidente stradale con un autocarro, lo uccidono. Ma gli uomini di Spike riescono a eliminare Meier e Davies; Spike, vecchio amico di Simon McCann, decide di vendicarsi di Danny, anche se i suoi capi gli ordinano di lasciar perdere.
Danny torna nell'Oman e dà allo sceicco le prove del successo della missione. Con ciò, Hunter viene rilasciato e torna dalla sua famiglia mentre Danny torna in Australia dove raggiunge Anne, con cui ha intrecciato una relazione.
Poco tempo dopo, però Danny scopre che c'è un quarto uomo coinvolto negli omicidi dei figli dello sceicco. È Ranulph Fiennes, un ex membro del SAS, le cui esperienze sono state raccolte in un libro. Danny manda quindi Anne in Francia e incarica Hunter di proteggerla mentre lui porta a termine un'ultima missione; il figlio dello sceicco conferma infatti che Ranulph è uno dei tre assassini mentre Harris era innocente. Raggiunta la sede di Ranulph, Danny è accolto però da Spike, ma riesce a fuggire e a raggiungere Ranulph e, invece di ucciderlo, lo ferisce e gli fa delle foto in modo da fare credere che sia morto. Danny viene poi catturato da Spike, che lo porta in un magazzino abbandonato. Qui, dopo un faccia a faccia, arriva un agente del governo britannico il quale rivela che il governo stesso sta dietro gli eventi a causa di preziose riserve petrolifere dello sceicco. Scoppia poi un combattimento a tre e alla fine Danny riesce a fuggire.
Intanto a Parigi l'ex agente di Danny ed un complice tentano di rapire Anne nella metropolitana, tentativo sventato da Hunter, che spara ad una gamba dell'ex agente ma gli risparmia la vita.
Danny e Hunter tornano in Oman per consegnare allo sceicco le foto fatte per indurre lo sceicco a credere che la sua vendetta sia finalmente completa, ma arriva Spike il quale rivela allo sceicco che le immagini sono false e poi lo uccide pugnalandolo (per vendicare la morte del suo amico). Il figlio dello sceicco, rimasto impassibile, dà del denaro a Spike, ma poi ci ripensa ed invia i suoi uomini per uccidere l'ex SAS. Hunter vede Spike fuggire, neutralizza gli inseguitori e inizia a sua volta un inseguimento. Alla fine Hunter e Danny fermano Spike nel deserto. Qui, dopo una breve discussione, Hunter e Danny si spartiscono parte dei soldi e danno il resto a Spike che vuole sparire, per sfuggire alla vendetta dei suoi ormai ex datori di lavoro. Danny, che intanto ha raggiunto Anne in Francia, vuole incominciare una nuova vita.
Storyline:
In 1980, Danny Bryce, Hunter, Davies and Meier are a group of mercenaries who arrive in Mexico to assassinate someone. Danny is shot when he becomes distracted after realising that he has killed the man in front of the target's young child. Affected by this, Danny retires from the group and returns to Australia.
The following year, Danny is summoned to Oman to meet a handler known as "the Agent", and he learns that Hunter was unable to do a $6 million job and that Danny must complete Hunter's mission in exchange for Hunter's life. Amr, a Sheikh and deposed king of a small region of Oman, wants Danny to kill three former SAS troopers—Steven Harris, Warwick Cregg and Simon McCann—for killing his three eldest sons during the Dhofar Rebellion. Danny must videotape their confessions and make their deaths look like accidents before Amr dies from his illness. This will allow Amr's fourth son Bakhait to regain control of his father's desert region. Danny approaches Davies and Meier, enlisting them to help in exchange for $3 million each for both, while Danny will not receive anything because he merely wants to free Hunter.
Danny and Meier find Harris in Oman and gain access to his house while pretending to be researchers making a documentary. After Harris confesses on videotape, they take him to the bathroom, intending to make it look like he slipped and hit his head. However, Harris's girlfriend knocks on the door. While Danny and Meier are distracted, Harris attempts to break free, causing Meier to shoot him fatally. In England, Davies travels to a pub known to be frequented by British military personnel and questions bar patrons about former SAS members in Oman. This is reported to the Feather Men, a secret society of former operatives protecting their own. Their head enforcer, Spike Logan, is sent to investigate.
Davies discovers Cregg preparing for a long nighttime march in wintry weather on the Brecon Beacons mountain range. Danny infiltrates the base, disguised in uniform, and drugs Cregg's coffee. Danny follows Cregg and makes him confess before the drug puts him into shock to die of hypothermia.
Aware that the Feather Men are now following them, Danny decides to use a different tactic to kill their last target, McCann, who is now working as a mercenary. Their plan is to set up a fake job interview to lure McCann from his house and to crash a remote-controlled truck into McCann's car. With the help of the inexperienced Jake, Meier kills McCann. However, Logan and his men were watching McCann. A gunfight ensues, and Jake accidentally kills Meier.
Danny and Davies part ways. Davies is tracked down by Logan's men and is fatally hit by a truck while trying to escape. Danny returns to Oman and gives Amr the last confession, which he has faked. Hunter is released while Danny returns to Australia and reunites with Anne, a childhood acquaintance.
Danny is informed by the Agent that there is one last man who participated in the murder of Amr's sons, Ranulph Fiennes, who is about to release a book about his experiences in the SAS. Danny sends Anne to France so that Hunter can protect her. Bakhait confirms that Harris was innocent. Logan traces Danny through the Agent and sends a team to protect the author, but Jake distracts them, allowing Danny to shoot Fiennes. Danny merely wounds Fiennes, but takes pictures that appear to show him dead. Logan captures Danny, taking him to an abandoned warehouse, but a government agent arrives and reveals that the British government is behind the death of Amr's three sons because of Amr's valuable oil reserves and that Bakhait was in on it the whole time.
A three-way battle ensues, with Danny escaping and Logan shooting the government agent. Danny and Hunter head to Oman to give Amr the pictures. However, Logan arrives and tells Amr that the pictures are fake and stabs him to death. Bakhait does not care because his father's death benefits him, similar to how he sacrificed his three brothers to the British in exchange for wealth. Bakhait gives $6 million to Logan, which was meant for Danny and Hunter. Hunter spots Logan leaving, where they chase him with Amr's men.
After stopping Amr's men, Danny and Hunter confront Logan on a desert road. Hunter takes some of the money for his expenses and his family. They leave the remaining money to Logan, telling him that he will need it to start a new life after killing the government agent and acting against the wishes of the Feather Men and the British government. Danny says that it is over for him and that Logan must make up his own mind about what to do. Danny reunites with Anne.
