Tratto dal best seller di Philippa Gregory, L’ALTRA DONNA DEL RE è un’avvincente e sensuale storia d’amore, di intrighi, e tradimenti, sullo sfondo di un momento storico particolarmente delicato e di grandi trasformazioni. Due sorelle, Anna (Natalie Portman) e Maria (Scarlett Johansson) Bolena, vengono spinte dalla sfrenata ambizione del padre e dello zio, che mirano ad accrescere il potere e lo status della famiglia, a conquistare l’affetto del re d’Inghilterra (Eric Bana). Le due ragazze vengono catapultate, dalla loro tranquilla vita di campagna, nell’eccitante e pericolosa vita di corte, e ciò che inizia come un semplice tentativo di aiuto per la loro famiglia, si trasforma gradualmente in una spietata rivalità fra le due, al fine di ricevere i favori del re. Inizialmente Maria riesce ad avere la meglio, e diventa l’amante di Enrico, dandogli una figlia illegittima. Tuttavia Anna, intelligente, calcolatrice, e temeraria, riesce a mettere da parte sia sua sorella che la moglie del Re, la Regina Caterina d’Aragona, nella sua inesorabile impresa di seduzione. "Sir Thomas considera le figlie Anna (Natalie Portman) e Maria (Scarlett Johansson), un bene prezioso, la cui vita personale deve essere gestita in modo da ottenere il massimo beneficio sociale e finanziario per la famiglia. Convinto che Anna possieda le qualità per conquistare l’uomo di un rango molto più elevato, Sir Thomas rifiuta una proposta di matrimonio da parte di una famiglia di mercanti, offrendo loro invece la sua secondogenita.

Sir Thomas presto intravede un’occasione d’oro per sfruttare la bellezza e l’intelligenza di Anna, quando suo cognato, il Duca di Norfolk, organizza una visita del Re Enrico VIII presso la famiglia Bolena. Sapendo che la regina Caterina non ha mai dato alla luce un maschio e che Enrico è alla ricerca di un’amante che gli dia un erede, Thomas istruisce Anna su come usare tutte le sue arti per sedurre il monarca. Enrico resta affascinato dalla sfrontatezza della giovane donna, tuttavia la sua ostinatezza lo induce a rivolgere le sue attenzioni verso la dolce e sensuale Maria, nonostante sia una sposa novella.

Totalmente infatuato della donna, il re convoca l’intera famiglia Bolena, fra cui madre, padre, Duca di Norfolk, entrambe le sorelle e il loro fratello Giorgio, alla sua Corte, per annunciare esplicitamente che intende fare di Maria la sua amante. Sir Thomas e il Duca di Norfolk si rallegrano della piega che hanno preso gli eventi, e persino il marito di Maria è costretto ad assoggettarsi obbedientemente all’equivoco accordo. Maria però, che nel suo intimo è ancora una semplice ragazza di campagna, non nutre alcun interesse per la vita di corte. Anna, invece non si rassegna al rifiuto del re, e cova un risentimento nascosto nei confronti di sua sorella. Nel tentativo di ribellarsi agli eventi, si sposa in gran segreto. Il suo matrimonio viene però presto scoperto da Maria, che ne informa la famiglia. Anna viene bandita dalla Corte Reale e allontanata in Francia.

Malgrado la sua iniziale riluttanza, Maria presto si scopre profondamente innamorata del tenero e premuroso Enrico. Resta incinta e tutto va bene fino al momento in cui una gravidanza difficile non la costringe a letto, e l’interesse romantico del re nei suoi confronti svanisce. Quando Sir Thomas manda a chiamare Anna affinché torni a Corte per intrattenere il re, la ragazza torna immediatamente. Quindi proprio nel momento in cui Maria e Giorgio si rendono conto che la loro posizione è diventata precaria, Anna, ancora amareggiata, trama di sedurre il re per vendicarsi di ciò che lei considera un imperdonabile tradimento da parte di sua sorella.

Prima di tutto Anna persuade Enrico ad allontanare Maria dalla Corte, affinché raggiunga suo marito in campagna. Quando Maria è ormai lontana, Anna è pronta a mettere in atto il suo piano inteligente non solo per diventare l’amante del re, bensì la regina a tutti gli effetti. Nega al re i suoi favori sessuali, pretendendo che lui annulli il suo ventennale matrimonio con Caterina, che la ripudi per sposare lei. Enrico tentenna perché i divorzi non sono consentiti dalla Chiesa e una tale decisione in tal senso potrebbe causare una rottura con il Papa e probabilmente spingere le forze fedeli a Roma a invadere il Paese.

Quando viene scoperto il matrimonio segreto di Anna, l’intero suo piano rischia di andare in fumo. A quel punto Anna si rivolge all’unica persona sulla quale può contare, e quindi chiede a Maria di tornare a Corte. Maria, che cerca la pace con sua sorella, convince Enrico che può fidarsi di Anna, e il Re a quel punto la sposa, visto che anche lei ora aspetta un figlio da lui. Anna ha vinto, e viene incoronata Regina d’Inghilterra.

Tuttavia pagherà questa vittoria a caro prezzo. Il controverso matrimonio di Enrico e Anna va al di là di un semplice scandalo di corte; la scissione di Enrico dalla Chiesa di Roma spinge l’Inghilterra sull’orlo di una guerra. Il re è disgustato da se stesso e dalla sua nuova moglie, e con gli occhi del mondo puntati sul suo regno, si rende conto che l’unico modo per evitare un’umiliazione è riuscire ad avere un figlio maschio da Anna. Tuttavia, la prima volta Anna dà alla luce una bambina, e la seconda non riesce a portare a termine la gravidanza: la pazienza del re nei confronti della famiglia Bolena giunge al termine. Anna, Maria e Giorgio, alla mercé di un re vendicativo e di una corte impietosa, vengono sacrificati proprio dal padre e dallo zio, che solo così riescono a salvare se stessi. Mentre la spada del boia attende la testa di Anna, Maria sarà l’unica a difenderla, ma stavolta le sue parole non potranno salvarla. Il forte e inesauribile legame fra le due sorelle, sarà l’unica e ultima consolazione di Anna".

"To their father, Sir Thomas Boleyn, Anne (Natalie Portman) and her younger sister Mary (Scarlett Johansson) are precious commodities whose personal lives must be carefully managed so as to yield maximum financial and social benefit for the family. Convinced that Anne has the potential to attract a suitor of superior standing, Sir Thomas turns down a marriage proposal from a merchant family and offers them Mary instead.
Sir Thomas soon sees a golden opportunity to exploit Anne’s beauty and wit when his brother-in-law, the Duke of Norfolk, arranges a visit to the Boleyn household by King Henry VIII. Aware that Queen Katherine has been unable to produce a male heir and Henry is on the prowl for a mistress, Thomas instructs Anne to do her best to make a favourable impression on the monarch. Henry is immediately intrigued by the brazen young woman, but Anne proves too headstrong for the ruler who turns his attention instead to the sweet-natured and equally lovely – though recently married – Mary.
Deeply enthralled, the king summons the entire Boleyn family – including mother and father, Norfolk, both Boleyn sisters, and their brother George – to the Royal Court for the express purpose of making Mary his lover. Sir Thomas and the Duke of Norfolk are delighted at this turn of events – and even Mary’s passive husband dutifully agrees to the dubious arrangement – but Mary, a simple country girl at heart, has no interest in the life of a courtier. Anne, still stinging from the king’s rebuff, seethes with silent anger toward her sister. Anne, taking her future and fortune into her own hands, elopes in a forbidden, secret marriage, but this is quickly discovered by Mary, who informs the family. They send her to France, banishing her from Henry’s court.
Despite her initial reluctance, Mary soon finds herself deeply in love with the tender and attentive Henry. She becomes pregnant with Henry’s child, and all is well, until her difficult pregnancy confines her to bed rest and the king’s romantic interest in her wanes. When Sir Thomas summons Anne to return to court to entertain the king, it is the moment Anne has been waiting for. Just as Mary and George find their positions at court starting to slip, Anne, still bitter, plots to seduce the king and to exact revenge for what she sees as her sister’s unforgivable betrayal.
First, Anne taunts her sister over the long-held grudge and persuades Henry to cast Mary and the newborn child out of court and back to her destitute husband in the country. With Mary out of sight, Anne begins to play out her clever scheme to become not only the king’s mistress, but his queen. She withholds sex from Henry, demanding that the king annul his twenty-year marriage to Katherine, send her away, and marry Anne. Henry demurs – because divorces are not allowed within the church, such a move would require a split with the Pope and likely spur an invasion by forces loyal to Rome.
When news of Anne’s brief secret marriage surfaces, that one loose thread threatens to unravel the entire plan. The calculating Anne calls upon the only person she knows she can count on, summoning Mary back to court. Mary, seeking peace with her sister, tells Henry that he can trust Anne, and the king, convinced by the other Boleyn girl, marries Anne, who is now pregnant with his child. Anne has won – she is crowned Queen of England.
But Anne’s victory comes at a high price. Henry’s controversial marriage to Anne proves more than simply a scandal in court; the repercussions of Henry’s split with Rome push England to the brink of war. The king is left feeling disgusted with himself and his new bride, and with the eyes of the world on his court, Henry knows he can avoid humiliation only if Anne produces a son. When Anne’s first pregnancy results in a girl and she covers up the miscarriage of a second pregnancy, the king’s patience with the Boleyn family reaches an end. Anne, Mary, and George, at the mercy of a vengeful king and a pitiless court, are stunned when their father and uncle sacrifice the children in an attempt to save themselves.
