Regista, sceneggiatrice e produttrice, Sofia (Carmina) Coppola è figlia d’arte nel senso più nobile del termine, ossia del mitico regista di The Conversation (La conversazione, 1974) e Apocalypse Now (1979), tra la lunga lista di altri titoli, Francis Ford Coppola, ed è anche cugina di Nicolas Cage. Con la celluloide nel DNA Sofia Coppola debutta non a caso poco più che neonata in due celebri film diretti dal padre, The Godfather (Il Padrino, 1972) e The Godfather: Part II (Il padrino: Parte II, 1974). Prosegue negli anni Ottanta i suoi primi passi di bambina sempre nel mondo del cinema in veste attoriale, e sempre diretta dal padre. Con lo pseudonimo di ‘Domino’ è ad esempio in The Outsiders (I ragazzi della Cinquantaseiesima strada, 1983), Rumble Fish (Rusty il selvaggio, 1983), The Cotton Club (Cotton Club, 1984), con Richard Gere, Nicolas Cage e Diane Lane, e Peggy Sue Got Married (Peggy Sue si è sposata, 1986). Cresciuta nel Nord della California, lavora come costumista in due film (il segmento Life without Zoe di New York Sories del 1989, di cui scrive anche la sceneggiatura e, l’anno seguente, The Spirit of ‘76). Fase in cui già si fa notare per l’emergente caratterizzazione artistica di una certa levatura. Ancora sotto la direzione del padre nel 1990 interpreta Mary Corleone in The Godfather: Part III (Il padrino: Parte III) e in veste attoriale prosegue con altri titoli fino ad oggi, tra cui anche Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (Star Wars: Episodio I – La minaccia Fantasma, 1999), dove interpreta Saché.
Dopo gli studi d’Arte al California Institute of the Arts debutta alla regia nel 1998 sceneggiando e dirigendo il cortometraggio Lick the Star (Lecca la stella), presentato in anteprima mondiale alla 55a edizione della Mostra Internazionale del Cinema al Lido di Venezia: storia ambientata in una junior School High del Nord Carolina, dove protagonista è un non proprio simpaticissimo quartetto di ragazzine tredicenni, la cui capobanda muore a causa del suo piano per avvelenare i ragazzi della scuola. Ma il debutto vero e proprio è legato al suo primo lungometraggio The Virgin Suicides (Il giardino delle Vergini suicide) realizzato appena l’anno seguente. Film adattato dall’omonimo romanzo del Premio Pulitzer Jeffrey Eugenides che vede interpreti Kirsten Dunst, Josh Hartnett, James Woods e Kathleen Turner nella dolorosa storia di cinque tormentate sorelle tra i quindici e i diciannove anni, per le quali non è certo sufficiente la corte dei ragazzi per avere una vita felice, cui infatti pongono tragicamente fine. Proiettato all’International Film Festival di Cannes, The Virgin Suicides le vale il ‘MOVIE AWARD’ di MTV nella categoria ‘Miglior Realizzatore Emergente’. Con il suo secondo film, Lost in Translation (L’amore tradotto, 2003) che vede Bill Murray e Scarlett Johansson nei panni di due americani a Tokyo, presentato alla 60° edizione della Mostra Internazionale del Cinema al Lido di Venezia, Sofia Coppola vince l’OSCAR per la ‘Migliore Sceneggiatura Originale’ ed è candidata a un’altra delle prestigiose statuette della Academy nelle categorie ‘Miglior Regista’ e ‘Miglior Film’. Tra i numerosi altri riconoscimenti, è anche premiata con il Golden Globe per la ‘Migliore Sceneggiatura’, ed è candidata ad un altro Golden Globe come ‘Miglior Regista’. Vince inoltre gli ‘Indipendent Spirit Awards’ nelle categorie ‘Miglior Regista, Migliore Sceneggiatura’ e ‘Miglior Film’. L’edizione 2006 dell’International Film Festival di Cannes la vede di nuovo impegnata come regista nel film Marie Antoinette, dove dirige ancora una volta Kirsten Dunst nelle vesti del personaggio protagonista Maria Antonietta, la leggendaria quanto ingenua regina adolescente promessa sposa di Re Luigi XVI che all’età di soli quattordici anni viene gettata nel turbine dell’opulenta corte francese e costretta da una vita fatta di scandali e congiure di palazzo. Sofia Coppola ne ripercorre le tappe del disorientamento fino alla ribellione della giovane e incompresa principessa, con l’intento di offrire allo spettatore un’inedita lettura del mitico personaggio.

Director, scriptwriter and producer, Sofia Coppola she’s an actor son of an actor father, the mighty director Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Conversation (1974) and Apocalypse Now (1979), just to mention a few titles; she is also cousin of Nicolas Cage.
With her DNA full of “celluloid” Sofia Coppola gave her first performance in two of the most famous movies directed by her father: The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather, Part II (1974) when she was just a baby. She kept playing roles in movies directed by her daddy during the 80s. She used the nickname Domino in the film The Outsiders (1983), Rumble Fish (1983), The Cotton Club (1984) with Richard Gere, Nicolas Cage and Diane Lane and in the film Peggy Sue Got Married (1986).
She grew up in the North of California; she worked as a costume designer in two films (the segment of Life without Zoe from New York Stories in 1989, of which she wrote the script and, the year after, in The Spirit of ‘76). During these years she made herself noticed thanks to her brilliant skills, even though roughly new in the Industry. Still under the director wing of her father, Sofia Coppola played Mary Corleone in The Godfather, Part III (1990) and as an actress she kept going up today. Among the movies she’s been in we can mention Star Wars: Episode I –The Phantom Menace (1999) where she portrayed Sache’.
After attending 'The California Institute of Art' she makes her first attempt as director and scriptwriter in 1998 with the short film Lick the Star. The film was presented as a preview at the '55th Mostra Internazionale del cinema' in Venice (Italy). The story is set in a junior High School in North Carolina, the leading role is confided to a foursome of teenager’s girls, not very nice after all, whose leader died as a consequence to her plot of poisoning the boys of the school. But Sofia Coppola’s real debut was the movie The Virgin Suicides shot the year after. Movie based on the novel by Pulitzer winner Jeffrey Eugenides had as leading actresses Kirsten Dunst and Kathleen Turner, and as leading actors Josh Hartnett and James Woods played the painful story of five sisters, between the age of fifteen and nineteen, who need more than just the courtships of the boys to have a happy life; life that they ended in a very tragic way. The movie The Virgin Suicides was screened at 'The International Film Festival' in Cannes (France) and awarded to Sofia Coppola the “Movie Award” from MTV for the category “Best New Filmmaker”. With her second film Lost in Translation (2003) Sofia Coppola won the Oscar® as “Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen” and she was nominated for “Best Director” and “Best Picture”. Lost in Translation starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as two Americans in Tokyo, was also presented at the '60th Mostra Internazionale del Cinema' in Venice. With this same film she won the Golden Globe as “Best Screenplay in a Motion Picture” and nominated as “Best Director”; also she won the Independent Spirit Award as “Best Director”, “Best Feature” and “Best Screenplay”.
In 2006 at the 'International Film Festival' in Cannes (France) Sofia Coppola is present as a director for her new film Marie Antoinette, where she directs once again Kirsten Dunst this time as Marie Antoinette, the almost mythological teenager queen, bride-to-be to King Louis XVI, who at the young age of fourteen found herself into the turmoil of the luxurious life at the French Court and pushed to live a life filled with outrages and conspiracies. Sofia Coppola wants to give the audience an unusual view of the mythical character by following her life up to the rebellion of the young and misunderstood Princess.
