Sinossi:
Bill Borgens (Gregg Kinnear), romanziere che ha trasmesso l'amore per la scrittura ai due figli, fatica a riprendersi da quando tre anni prima la moglie Erica (Jennifer Connelly) lo ha lasciato per un altro uomo. Invece di lavorare a un nuovo libro, trascorre le giornate a spiare i movimenti di Erica e del suo nuovo compagno e ogni anno insiste che Rusty (Nat Wolff), il figlio sedicenne romantico poeta in attesa del grande amore, prepari per il giorno del Ringraziamento il posto a tavola per la madre, anche se questa non si presenta mai. Sam (Lily Collins), la figlia diciannovenne, invece non vuol sapere nulla della madre e si rifiuta di vederla anche quando si appresta a pubblicare il suo primo romanzo. La separazione dei genitori ha lasciato molti strascichi in lei, facendola diventare insensibile anche all'amore tanto da rifiutare le attenzioni del compagno Lou (Logan Lerman). Quando, durante una presentazione del libro di Sam, Erica si presenta senza essere stata invitata, si ritrova di fronte a un netto rifiuto che riapre ferite mai sanate mandandola fuori controllo. Per salvarla, tutta la famiglia dovrà trovare la forza di mettere da parte i rancori e guardare avanti.

An acclaimed writer, his ex-wife, and their teenaged children come to terms with the complexities of love in all its forms over the course of one tumultuous year.
Meet the Borgens. William Borgens is an acclaimed author who hasn't written a word since his ex-wife Erica left him 3 years ago for another man. In between spying on Erica and casual romps with his married neighbour Tricia, Bill is dealing with the complexities of raising his teenage children Samantha and Rusty. Samantha is publishing her first novel and is determined to avoid love at all costs - after all she's seen what it has done to her parents. In between hook ups, she meets "nice guy" Lou who will stop at nothing to win her over. Rusty, is an aspiring fantasy writer and Stephen King aficionado, who is on a quest to gain 'life experiences'. He falls for the beautiful, but troubled Kate and gets his first taste of love and a broken heart. A tale of family, love (lost and found), and how endings can make new beginnings. There are no rewrites in life, only second chances.
