'Dark Tower' Composer Junkie XL on Why 'Blade Runner' Is the Best Film Score
05/08/2017
- Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, is known for his epic film scores including The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max: Fury Road. Now he's tackling the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. During a tour of his studio, The Hollywood Reporter had the composer play a game of First, Best, Last, Worst — where talent is challenged to answer a question in each category. Holkenborg recalls the first concert he went to (Killing Joke) and how he's seen Blade Runner "a hundred times or so." "At the time, I was a synthesize freak to begin with. But when it came out, it just changed my world," Holkenborg said of the score by Vangelis. He also mentions that he thinks the biggest misconception about electronic music is that "it's not human." "I completely agree though that half of the electronic music out there doesn't have any soul to it, but you can say that about any music style," he said. "We can look at rock bands, and half of the rock bands to me, have no soul, and the other half have everything. I don't think this is unique for electronic music." Watch all of Junkie XL's answers in the video above, and stay tuned to Heat Vision for much more from The Dark Tower this weekend.
