- Julianne Moore will star in a re-imagining of Sebastian Lelio's critically acclaimed 2013 film Gloria. The new film, currently untitled, won't be a straight remake of the Chilean-Spanish drama, but is inspired by the film's story and characters. Moore will play a free-spirited woman in her 50s. Though lonely, she makes the best of her situation and fills her nights seeking love at social dance clubs for single adults in Los Angeles. Her fragile happiness changes the day she meets Arnold. Their intense passion, to which she gives her all, leaves her vacillating between hope and despair, until she uncovers a new strength and realizes that now, surprisingly, she can shine brighter than ever. "As one of the greatest actresses in the world, Julianne giving her interpretation of the character is not only a huge honor, it's irresistible. It's going to be like jazz, you’ll feel the spirit of the original story but it’ll be re-invigorated and vital," said Lelio. Lelio will write the adaptation of the script for the new film, which is set to shoot by the end of this year. Juan de Dios Larraín, who produced the original film, is producing the new project. The film is also being produced by his partner, the director Pablo Larrain. “This film tells a fascinating story from one of those thousands of women who try to be happy in their 50s, where an apparently boring life can be fascinating, erotic, fun and complex. Julianne Moore can´t be better for the role, with Sebastian in the directing,” said Juan de Dios Larraín. FilmNation Entertainment will launch international sales on the film at the upcoming Cannes market. The project marks a reunion for Lelio and FilmNation, which is also currently co-financing Lelio’s first English-language feature, Disobedience, with Film4. Lelio’s 2013 film Gloria debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, where lead actress Paulina García won the Silver Bear for Best Actress. It also played at the Toronto Film Festival, and was the Chilean entry for the best foreign language film for the Academy Awards. It received critical acclaim, with THR’s review stating: “It’s hard to imagine anyone with a heart and a brain not responding to the quiet delights and stunning intimacy of Chilean director Sebastian Lelio’s account of the personal evolution of a 58-year-old divorcee, played with scrupulous honesty and intelligence by the wonderful Paulina Garcia." Oscar winner Moore will next be seen starring in Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck , which will premiere in Competition in Cannes. She also stars in Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman 2 and stars opposite Matt Damon in George Clooney’s Suburbicon. She's repped by CAA and Management 360. Lelio recently debuted A Fantastic Woman at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear for best script. His first English-language feature, Disobedience, is currently in postproduction and stars Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz. Lelio is represented by Casarotto Ramsay & Associates and Management 360.
