- Morgan Freeman, Patricia Clarkson and Mark Ruffalo were just a few of the actors in attendance at AARP The Magazine's Movies for Grownups Awards held at the Beverly Hills Wilshire Hotel on Monday. It was a night commemorating actors who impact an older demographic, while also raising awareness for the organization's efforts within the 50-and-up community.
Kathy Griffin hosted the Grownups Awards for a second year. During her opening monologue, she included her own take on the current Oscars controversy and said that #OscarsSoYoung should be trending on Twitter, taking a stab at the Millennials in the audience.
AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins shared why she finds events like the Grownups Awards so important. "You shouldn’t be defined by how old you are," she said. "You can be helpful and successful and do good at any age, so I’m just glad that we’re here celebrating people who are 50 and older who are still doing amazing work and making a real difference."
Dick Van Dyke, who presented the best actor award to Bryan Cranston for his leading role in Trumbo, shared his mantra and advice for aging gracefully: “Young ain’t everything, this is the best time of my life, I’m having a wonderful time. [You’ve got to] keep moving, never stop moving, and never go down the stairs sideways is the best advice I can give.”
The night's career achievement honoree, Michael Douglas, was recognized for his ongoing contributions as an actor, husband, father and film producer. Bette Midler presented the award to her friend, who received a standing ovation and jokingly opened his speech saying, "I remember all my films [but] I don’t remember any adult films."
Michael Douglas continued by thanking AARP and wife Catherine-Zeta Jones: "The AARP does such great work to support the elderly, as does my wife Catherine, from the moment she married me! Darling, I thank you for all your support, and the family".
