Linda è una psicoterapeuta che viene spinta al limite mentre si prende cura della figlia, che ha un disturbo alimentari pediatrico che richiede alimentazione supplementare notturna tramite sondino e partecipare a un programma diurno in ospedale, che Linda porta e porta ogni giorno. Il marito di Linda, Charles, è via per lavoro come capitano di nave.
La situazione della famiglia peggiora quando il loro appartamento Montauk viene allagato dopo il crollo del soffitto. Linda è costretta a trasferirsi con la figlia in un motel fatiscente. Mentre vive lì, Linda incontra una commessa sarcastica di nome Diana e il suo vicino James, il sovrintendente del motel. Linda fatica a dormire con il rumore della pompa interna di alimentazione della figlia. Privata del sonno, passa le notti fuori dalla stanza del motel, bevendo vino, fumando marijuana, ascoltando musica e mangiando cibo spazzatura. Durante la notte, Linda lascia anche la figlia per controllare le riparazioni dell'appartamento, che sono state ritardate dalla partenza improvvisa dell'appaltatore.
Professionalmente, Linda è circondata da clienti difficili e impegnative, tra cui Caroline, una neomadre che soffre di paranoia e ansia post-partum. Linda cerca anche terapia da un'altra collega, che è per lo più poco d'aiuto e sempre più esasperata dalla mancanza di confini professionali. Quando Charles chiama per sapere come sta Linda, è critico e poco di supporto, affermando che vorrebbe poter "stare tutto il giorno" come terapeuta. Anche il medico di sua figlia nel programma di ospedale diurno è poco comprensivo e rimprovera Linda per aver spesso saltato le sedute di terapia familiare. Dice a Linda che se sua figlia non raggiungerà i suoi obiettivi di peso entro la fine della settimana, il livello di cura della figlia sarà rivalutato. Linda sente di essere messa in difficoltà e che sua figlia non mangerà di più mentre lei si affida al sondino.
Durante una seduta di terapia, Caroline abbandona il suo bambino nell'ufficio di Linda. Linda cerca senza successo di convincere la sua collega terapeuta ad aiutarla. Lei chiama quindi il marito di Caroline e gli chiede di andare subito a prendere il bambino, ma lui si rifiuta di lasciare il lavoro per farlo, costringendola a chiamare la polizia. Una notte, James cerca di legare con Linda. La aiuta a comprare droga sul dark web e offre supporto emotivo a sua figlia. Linda alla fine porta James nel suo appartamento per vedere il soffitto crollato, ma lui cade attraverso il pavimento danneggiato e si rompe una gamba.
Dopo che le viene detto che la figlia non riesce a fare il peso necessario per rimuovere il sondino, Linda crea una scenata durante la riunione del gruppo del programma ospedaliero per le madri nella sua situazione, che scatena quando il medico dice al gruppo che le malattie dei loro figli non sono colpa loro. Linda confessa alla sua terapeuta di aver abortito la prima gravidanza anni prima di avere la figlia e si sconvolge per i suoi fallimenti come madre. Le dice che non sarà più il suo terapeuta. Caroline appare una notte nella hall del motel mentre sta attraversando una crisi di salute mentale, chiedendo di Linda. Mentre Linda cerca di convincerla ad andare al pronto soccorso, Caroline la schiaffeggia e scappa. Linda la insegue, ma la perde su una spiaggia buia nelle vicinanze.
Tornando al motel, Linda rimuove il tubo della figlia e ha un'allucinazione del foro chirurgico che si chiude. Quando Linda torna nel suo appartamento, scopre che Charles è improvvisamente tornato a casa e ha fatto riparare il buco nel soffitto. Cerca di nascondere di aver lasciato la loro figlia sola al motel, ma James dice a Charles che si è preso cura di lei mentre Linda era via. Quando Charles vede che Linda ha tolto il sondino di alimentazione, corre verso la spiaggia. Corre ripetutamente in mare ma viene scaraventata a riva dalle onde pesanti. Linda si sveglia sulla spiaggia con la figlia al suo fianco. Promette che starà meglio, e la ragazza sorride.
Storyline:
Linda is a psychotherapist who is stretched to her limits while caring for her daughter, who has a pediatric feeding disorder that necessitates nightly supplemental feeding through a tube and participation in a day hospital program, which Linda drives her to and from every day. Linda's husband, Charles, is away at work as a ship captain.
The family's situation worsens when their Montauk apartment is flooded after the ceiling collapses. Linda is forced to move with their daughter into a shabby motel. While living there, Linda meets a snarky clerk named Diana and her neighbor James, the motel superintendent. Linda struggles to sleep with the noise of her daughter's internal feeding pump. Sleep-deprived, she spends nights outside the motel room, drinking wine, smoking marijuana, listening to music, and eating junk food. During the night, Linda also leaves her daughter to check on the apartment repairs, which have been delayed by the contractor's sudden departure.
Professionally, Linda is surrounded by difficult and demanding clients, including Caroline, a new mother suffering from paranoia and postpartum anxiety. Linda also seeks therapy from another colleague, who is largely unhelpful and increasingly exasperated by her lack of professional boundaries. When Charles calls to check in on Linda, he is critical and unsupportive, stating he wishes he could "sit around all day" as a therapist. Her daughter's doctor in the day hospital program is also unsympathetic and reprimands Linda for frequently missing family therapy sessions. She tells Linda that if her daughter does not meet her weight goals by week's end, her daughter's level of care will be reassessed. Linda feels she is being set up to fail and that her daughter will not eat more while she relies on the feeding tube.
During a therapy session, Caroline abandons her baby in Linda's office. Linda unsuccessfully tries to get her therapist colleague to help her. She then calls Caroline's husband and requests that he come pick up the baby immediately, but he refuses to leave work to do so, forcing her to call the police. One night, James attempts to bond with Linda. He helps her buy drugs on the dark web and offers emotional support to her daughter. Linda eventually brings James to her apartment to look at the collapsed ceiling, but he falls through the damaged floor and breaks his leg.
After being told that her daughter cannot make the necessary weight for her feeding tube to be removed, Linda causes a scene at the hospital program's group meeting for mothers in her situation, set off when the doctor tells the group that their children's illnesses are not their fault. Linda confesses to her therapist that she aborted her first pregnancy years before having her daughter and becomes distraught about her failings as a mother. He tells her he will no longer be her therapist. Caroline appears one night at the motel lobby while having a mental health crisis, asking for Linda. As Linda tries to convince her to go to an emergency room, Caroline slaps her and runs away. Linda pursues, but loses her on a dark nearby beach.
Returning to the motel, Linda removes her daughter's tube and has an hallucination of the surgical hole closing. When Linda returns to her apartment, she discovers that Charles has suddenly returned home and had the hole in the ceiling repaired. She tries to hide that she left their daughter alone at the motel, but James tells Charles that he cared for her while Linda was gone. When Charles sees that Linda has removed the feeding tube, Linda runs to the beach. She repeatedly runs into the ocean but is thrown back to shore by heavy waves. Linda wakes up on the beach with her daughter beside her. She promises that she'll be better, and the girl smiles.
