Aggiornamenti freschi di giornata! (1° Marzo 2026) - David Koepp (stimato sceneggiatore di cult del calibro di Jurassic Park, Carlito's Way, Mission Impossibile e dello Spider-Man di Sam Raimi), ha ricavato l'idea per il copione di un film derivato da un suo romanzo omonimo, che ha per tema la minaccia di un virus letale. A dirigerlo è il regista Jonny Campbell (Doctor Who e Westworld)

In Cold Storage viene narrato che qualche decennio fa venne creato e contenuto in una struttura militare un microrganismo altamente infettivo e in costante mutamento, capace di estinguere il genere umano. Al tempo presente, però, i militari hanno ceduto la parte superiore della struttura a una compagnia privata, sigillando il virus nel sottosuolo. Così, all'alzarsi delle temperature, il microrganismo trova una via per evadere, rischiando di diffondersi al di fuori e di generare una catastrofe. A quel punto, il destino dell'umanità è nelle mani di un esperto di bioterrorismo in pensione e di due improbabili eroi impiegati nella struttura.

Nel 1979, la stazione spaziale Skylab viene sconnessa tramite rientro atmosferico, ma una bombola d'ossigeno sopravvive e atterra sull'Australia Occidentale. Un contadino lo prende e costruisce un museo Skylab improvvisato intorno ad esso.
Nel 2007, il biochimico Dr. Hero Martins accompagna gli agenti bioterroristici del Pentagono Robert Quinn e Trini Romano al serbatoio, che si scopre essere andato nello spazio trasportando un fungo infettivo per lo studio, e pochi giorni prima dell'arrivo dei tre un fungo fortemente mutato trova una via d'uscita dal serbatoio mentre il contadino tentava di pulirlo, spingendo il fungo a infettarlo e uccidere lui e molti uomini nell'area circostante. Martins prende un campione del fungo, prima che una toppa su cui ha calpestato corroda gli stivali della sua tuta protettiva, infetti Martins e inizi a controllare le sue attività prima che, in un ultimo momento di lucidità , Martins si suicidi. I militari inceneriscono la fattoria e i cadaveri mentre il campione viene portato in una camera fredda sotterranea presso l'Atchison Storage Facility in Kansas.
Negli anni successivi, il governo ha sigillato la cassaforte e affittato la sezione a livello del suolo a una società di self storage. Al presente, la cliente anziana Ma Rooney entra nel suo deposito con l'intenzione di suicidarsi, e le guardie notturne Travis e Naomi iniziano a sentire un allarme che suona e cercano di scoprirne la fonte. Si scopre che si tratta di un allarme per un malfunzionamento nei sistemi della cassaforte causato da un aumento delle temperature, che porta Robert a essere contattato nella sua casa di Raleigh, North Carolina, da un ufficiale militare che, quando viene chiesto un nome, si soprannomina "Abigail". Conoscendo i pericoli portati dal fungo, che sta già uscendo dalla cassaforte, Robert chiede ai militari un trasporto. Una volta in Kansas, viene accolto da Trini, che lo accompagna a prendere un dispositivo a casa sua.
Travis e Naomi si dirigono verso la cassaforte sigillata, dove un re ratto infetto è fuori dalla porta che li separa da un fungo in rapida crescita che cerca di uscire. Fuori, l'ex fidanzato di Naomi, Mike, arriva in macchina e un ceppo del fungo che è riuscito a uscire infettando uno scarafaggio entra nel bagagliaio, infettando il gatto morto di Mike. Quando Mike lascia uscire il gatto rianimato, questo si uccide trafiggendo la testa in un'antenna, diffondendo resti che infettano sia Mike che un cervo. Tornando al livello del suolo, Travis e Naomi vedono che Mike e il cervo sono entrati, e mentre il cervo si gonfia ed esplode, Mike li insegue sperando di diffondere il fungo prima che la coppia si nasconda in uno dei magazzini. Chiamano l'esercito, e Abigail li indirizza da Robert, che dice loro che sta arrivando e consiglia loro di rimanere nascosti.
Tuttavia, il manager Griffin arriva con una banda di motociclisti per prendere televisori di contrabbando dal deposito. Travis e Naomi lasciano il loro nascondiglio volendo avvertirli di fuggire, ma Mike arriva prima e infetta i membri della gang mentre Griffin scappa. Mentre si volta verso la coppia, vengono salvati da Ma Rooney. Escono e trovano Robert, che consegna loro una bomba sporca da mettere fuori dalla porta della cassaforte per distruggere l'intera struttura dall'interno ed eliminare ogni traccia del fungo. Mentre la coppia piazza la bomba, uccidendo uno degli infetti lungo il percorso, Robert uccide un infetto in fuga, facendolo cadere sulla schiena e trovandosi incapace di rialzarsi. Griffin esce e cerca di rubare le chiavi dell'auto di Robert quando una Trini in arrivo lo uccide. Travis e Naomi poi appaiono e vanno d'accordo con Robert sull'auto di Trini, e se ne vanno proprio mentre la bomba esplode.
In 1979, space station Skylab is decomissioned through atmospheric reentry, but an oxygen tank survives and lands on Western Australia. A farmer takes it and makes a makeshift Skylab museum around it.
In 2007, biochemist Dr. Hero Martins goes along with Pentagon bioterror operatives Robert Quinn and Trini Romano to the tank, that turned out to have gone into space carrying an infectious fungus for study, and days before the three arrived a heavily mutated fungus found a way out of the tank as the farmer attempted cleaning it, prompting the fungus to infect and kill him and many men in the surrounding area. Martins takes a sample of the fungus, before a patch that she stepped on corrodes the boots of her hazmat suit, infects Martins and starts controlling her activities before in a last moment of lucidity, Martins commits suicide. The military incinerate the farm and the corpses while the sample is taken to an underground cold storage vault at the Atchison Storage Facility in Kansas.
In the intervening years, the government has sealed the vault and rented the ground level section to a self storage company. In the present day, elderly client Ma Rooney enters her storage unit intent on committing suicide, and night guards Travis and Naomi start hearing a beeping alarm and try to discover its source. It turns out to be an alert for a malfunction in the vault's systems caused by a rise in temperatures, prompting Robert to be contacted in his Raleigh, North Carolina home by a military officer who when asked for a name, nicknames herself "Abigail". Knowing the dangers brought by the fungus, which is already breaking out of the vault, Robert asks the military for transportation. Once in Kansas he is received by Trini, who drives him to pick up a device in her home.
Travis and Naomi head towards the sealed vault, where an infected rat king is outside the door separating them from a rapidly growing fungus trying to break out. Outside, Naomi's ex-boyfriend Mike arrives in his car, and a strain of the fungus that managed to get outside infecting a cockroach enters the trunk, infecting Mike's dead cat. Once Mike lets the revived cat out, it kills itself impaling its head in an antenna, spreading remains that infect both Mike and a deer. Returning to the ground level, Travis and Naomi see Mike and the deer have entered, and while the deer swells and explodes, Mike pursues them hoping to spread the fungus before the duo hides in one of the storage units. They call the military, and Abigail redirects them to Robert, who tells them that he is arriving and advises them to remain hidden.
However, manager Griffin arrives with a biker gang to take smuggled televisions from storage. Travis and Naomi leave their hiding spot wanting to warn them to flee, but Mike arrives before and infects the gang members as Griffin runs away. As he turns towards the duo, they are saved by Ma Rooney. They get outside and find Robert, who gives them a dirty bomb to be put outside the vault door to destroy the whole facility from within and eliminate any trace of the fungus. As the duo place the bomb, killing one of the infected along the way, Robert kills an escaping infected, making him fall on his back and find himself unable to get up. Griffin gets outside and tries to steal Robert's car keys when an arriving Trini kills him. Travis and Naomi then appear and get along with Robert into Trini's car, and they drive away right as the bomb explodes.
Days later, Travis is spending time with Naomi and her daughter, while Robert is in the hospital, seeing news reports praising him for preventing the outbreak while condemning the military for nearly causing it. A visiting Abigail, whose real name is Ishani, admits this happened because she leaked Robert's reports on the fungus to the press.
