James (Andrew) McAvoy si diploma alla Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama nel 2000. Un tempo abitava in un appartamento che condivideva con Jesse Spencer. E’ sposato con la co-protagonista di Shamless, Anne-Marie Duff. Nel suo tempo libero McAvoy segue la sua squadra di calcio 'Celtic Football Club' e s’interessa a tutto quello che e’ attinente alla fantascienza. Nel 1995 McAvoy recita per la prima volta nel film The Near Room, diretto da David Hayman, e dopo, nel ruolo di Anthony Balfour nel film di Pat Barker Regeneration, del 1997. McAvoy ottiene il suo primo riconoscimento a livello internazionale quando interpreta Leto Atreides II per il canale televisivo di fantascienza nella miniserie Children of Dune (un adattamento dai libri di Frank Herbert), trasmessa nel 2003. Nel 2004 interpreta Steve McBride in un altro dramma scritto da Abbott dal titolo Shamless per il Canale 4, e per il quale viene nominato per 'British Comedy Award' per la 'Migliore Scoperta della TV. Nel 2005 recita la parte di Ben al Royal Court Theatre nella produzione Breathing Corpses e allo stesso anno risale la sua interpretazione di Mr. Tumnus, il fauno nel film della Disney e Walden Media Le cronache di Narmia: il leone, la strega e l’armadio. Lo troviamo anche in Wimbledon nei panni di Carl Colt; e del resto come Macbeth in Shakespeare Retold. Nel 2006, insieme a Forest Whitaker, recita nell’adattamento del romanzo di Giles Foden L’ultimo Re di Scozia, basato su (reali) eventi accaduti in Uganda ai tempi del regime del dittatore Idi Manin. Eventi visti attraverso gli occhi del suo (inventato) dottore personale durante gli anni 70. McAvoy è anche il protagonista, Brian Jackson, in Starter for Ten, un adattamento del romanzo omonimo di David Nicholls. McAvoy interpreta inoltre due ruoli in due pellicole per il 2007 – Becoming Jane e Espiazione, presentato alla 64a Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica al Lido di Venezia. Recentemente, ha appena finito di lavorare al film Wanted. Girano voci che potrebbe apparire nel film Frost Flowers ed in The Devil’s Whore, una miniserie per il Canale 4, e dovrebbe essere in gara per la parte di Montgomery Scott per l’undicesimo film Star Trek. Nel 2008 lavorera’ al film Three Way Spilt diretto da Neil Hunter e Tom Hunsinger. James Andrew McAvoy graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2000.
He once lived in a London houseshare with Jesse Spencer. He is married to his Shameless co-star, Anne-Marie Duff. In his spare time, McAvoy enjoys sci fi, and is a fan of 'Celtic Football Club'.
McAvoy's first roles were in David Hayman's The Near Room in 1995 and then as Anthony Balfour in Pat Barker's Regeneration in 1997. McAvoy got his first big international break playing the role of Leto Atreides II in the Sci Fi Channel miniseries Children of Dune (adapted from Frank Herbert’s novels) which aired in 2003. In 2004 he starred as Steve McBride in another Abbott-written drama series, Shameless on Channel 4, for which he was nominated for the British Comedy Award for Best TV Newcomer. In 2005, he played Ben in the Royal Court Theatre's production Breathing Corpses, as well as the role of Mr. Tumnus, the Faun in Disney and Walden Media's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He also starred in Wimbledon as Carl Colt. He also starred as Macbeth in Shakespeare Retold.
In 2006 he starred alongside Forest Whitaker in an adaptation of Giles Foden’s novel The Last King of Scotland based on the (factual) events of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s regime as seen by his (fictional) personal physician during the 1970s. He took the lead, Brian Jackson, in Starter for Ten (the adaptation of the David Nicholls novel of the same name).
McAvoy has roles in two films for 2007 – Becoming Jane and Atonement. He recently finished work on the film adaptation of Wanted. He is rumoured to be appearing in the movie Frost Flowers, Channel 4 mini series The Devil's Whore, and to be in the running to play Montgomery Scott in the upcoming eleventh Star Trek film. In 2008 he will work on the movie Three Way Spilt for directors Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger. McAvoy won the new Mary Selway/Orange Rising Star Award at the 2006 BAFTA Awards.
