24/05/2009
- (AGI) - Cannes, 24 maggio.
'Miglior Regista': BRILLANTE MENDOZA per KINATAY;
'Miglior Attore': CHRISTOPH WALTZ per IGLORIOUS BASTERDS di QUENTIN TARANTINO;
'Miglior Attrice': CHARLOTTE GAINGSBOURG per ANTICHRIST di LARS VON TRIER;
'Grand Prix': UN PROFETA di J. AUDIARD.
'WHITE RIBBON WINS PALME D’OR. WWI drama, 'Prophet' top Cannes Film Festival
Michael Haneke's "The White Ribbon," a stark, black-and-white drama set in a rural German village on the eve of WWI, received the Palme d'Or from the jury of the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on Sunday. Sony Pictures Classics acquired North American rights to the film before the festival.
The Grand Prix was awarded to French helmer Jacques Audiard's tough prison drama, "A Prophet."
Actor Christoph Waltz took the actor prize for his multilingual turn in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds." It was the sole kudo given to an American film in a competition light on Hollywood fare.
Charlotte Gainsbourg took the actress prize for her performance as a grieving mother in Lars von Trier's "Antichrist," the designated scandale of this year's fest.
Eighty-six-year-old French vet Alain Resnais, in competition with "Wild Grass," received a lifetime achievement award from the jury and a standing ovation from the audience in the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
While the top two prizewinners had been predicted and largely well received during the festival, three awards in particular drew heavy booing from the assembled press corps: the jury prize for South Korean vampire thriller "Thirst," the screenplay award for "Spring Fever" and especially the directing honors for "Kinatay" helmer Brillante Mendoza.
Sharing the jury prize with "Thirst" was Andrea Arnold's "Fish Tank."
