- The three-time Oscar winner was seen on set in her new role, as the former "Washington Post" publisher, for the Steven Spielberg film. Meryl Streep has debuted her take on former "Washington Post" publisher Katharine "Kay" Graham for her role in Steven Spielberg's upcoming film The Papers, courtesy of a photo that has emerged of Streep on set.
The movie, expected to be released later this year, tells the story of Graham's and Post editor Ben Bradlee’s (Tom Hanks) infamous decision to publish a series of leaked articles entitled “The Pentagon Papers” in 1971, the papers containing classified information regarding the Defense Department’s plans for the Vietnam War. The Papers marks the first time that Streep and Hanks have shared the big screen. The cast of the Fox and Amblin Entertainment film also includes Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Matthew Rhys, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bradley Whitford and Zach Woods. Spielberg is directing from a script by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer and will produce alongside Amy Pascal, through her Pascal Pictures banner, and Kristie Macosko Krieger. Graham’s granddaughter, Katharine Weymouth, told the Post of Streep taking on the role, "I think my grandmother would be incredibly flattered that Meryl Streep was playing her. Who wouldn’t be?" Weymouth also found the period piece to still be relevant: "With the media under attack, I think everybody has thought about it in a new light and realizes the importance of the people out there reporting on the facts." Fox is set to release The Papers in select theaters Dec. 22 ahead of a Jan. 12 wide release.
