- Joseph Kosinski could be reteaming with Tom Cruise on a sequel to Top Gun (Top Gun 2).
The filmmaker, who worked with the star on 2013's Oblivion, is circling the director's chair for the Paramount sequel to the 1986 action film about a class of hot-headed fighter pilots who love aviator sunglasses and volleyball equally.
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the Tony Scott-directed original, will return to produce, along with Skydance's David Ellison and Cruise. The follow-up will be set in modern day, with the original fighter pilots grappling with new drone technologies that are making their old style of flying obsolete. Another filmmaker that was in contention for the sequel was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales co-director Joachim Ronning, but he had to drop out of contention due to scheduling conflicts with his upcoming feature. Kosinski is experienced in bringing '80s remakes to the big screen, having helmed 2010's Tron: Legacy. He also just wrapped production on real-life firefighter drama Granite Mountain, starring Miles Teller and Taylor Kitsch. Kosinski is repped by CAA and Hirsch Wallerstien.
