- The CinemaCon audience was welcomed to Suburbicon, getting the first peek at a trailer for George Clooney's latest directorial project.
During Paramount's presentation, Clooney and his film’s stars Matt Damon and Julianne Moore were in attendance to introduce the new footage Tuesday in Las Vegas. “We knocked over a few casinos here, haven’t we?” said Clooney to laughs from the audience. He and his stars charmed the crowd with plenty of jokes. Clooney asked Damon, “What was it like to be directed by Batman?,” with Damon responding that he’d almost forgotten that Clooney even played that role. The upcoming film, set for release on Nov. 3, has a script by the Coen Brothers, and the first footage showed off their signature quirkiness paired with a dark and violent tone. Suburbicon's first trailer shows Moore as a picturesque blonde housewife who is being asked questions by an investigator (Oscar Isaac). The questions relate to a life insurance policy, and Isaac's character is suspicious about the death it involves.
Damon plays a bespectacled, buttoned-up man whose wife appears have to died in a crime, but there’s more to the story than he’s telling. The trailer gets progressively more violent, including a car bursting into flames while Damon’s character rides off on a kid’s tricycle. The actor was doing double-duty during the Paramount presentation, returning to the stage with director Alexander Payne to introduce the first footage of Downsizing. The audience was shown about 10 minutes of footage for the film, which is based in a world where people have the option to be shrunk down and lives their lives on a smaller scale. In the clip, a mini-man (Neil Patrick Harris) introduces a group to his life in a mini-mansion. In his home, his wife (Laura Dern) is enjoying a bath in her mini-tub, with her mini-diamonds.
One couple in the group (Damon and Kristen Wiig) are interested in the option of being shrunk down and are listening to the sales pitch. Apparently when you’re shrunk down, money goes a lot further, and so it offers the opportunity for a better life. The footage showed Damon’s character going through the process of being shrunk down as well (which required having all your facial hair shaved off). The 10 minutes of footage got a strong applause from the audience.
