Golden Globes 2017 - THR's Guide to the Golden Globes. What you need to know about Sunday’s show

06/01/2017 - Hollywood’s elite class of films and television shows will be honored at the 74th Golden Globe Awards, taking place Sunday at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Here’s what you need to know about the 2017 show. How to Watch Follow every glitz and glam moment of the red carpet with E! network’s red-carpet coverage at 3 p.m. PT, while NBC jump-starts its pre-show coverage at 4 p.m. PT. Catch every behind-the-scenes moment and show-stopping look prior to the beginning of the ceremony. The live broadcast of the ceremony begins at 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Pret-a-Reporter will provide photos and analysis of the hottest looks and trends as the stars walk the red carpet.

Who to Watch Remaining loyal to the network’s resident funnyman, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon finally has signed on to host the annual ceremony after years of turning his network down. Fallon follows three-time hosts Ricky Gervais and former Saturday Night Live castmates Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. He recently told THR he plans to take "very subtle" jabs at those seated in the room. "If I hit somebody, it's a very subtle hit, and everyone's in on the joke," he said. "I want to make sure everyone's laughing and having a good time. And I'm hopefully going to book the people in this crowd the next week, so I'll be edgy, but it's all in good fun, and I know how far I can take it."

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has praised Fallon as the ceremony’s host, saying: "This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year.” Adding to the ceremony’s star quotient, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and producer Dick Clark Productions have announced that presenters will include Ben Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Carrie Underwood, John Legend, Nicole Kidman, Brie Larson, Viola Davis, Anna Kendrick, Sylvester Stallone, Eddie Redmayne, Steve Carell, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna, Mandy Moore, Amy Schumer, Reese Witherspoon, Milo Ventimiglia, Sofia Vergara and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Aside from recognizing the season’s best in film and television, the ceremony will honor eight-time Golden Globe winner Meryl Streep with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The actress has been nominated 29 times, including her most recent nomination for 2016's film Florence Foster Jenkins, starring alongside Hugh Grant.

What to Watch Dancing and singing its way to the top, the musical La La Land  leads the film nominees with a total of seven nominations, followed by coming-of-age drama Moonlight with six. Leading the television nominations, the crime drama The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story dominates with five — the acclaimed show already has received numerous awards, including nine Emmys — followed by The Night Manager with four. If there's anything to know about the HFPA, it's that new blood is many times favored. The best TV drama category consists of newcomer shows competing against two-time Emmy winner for best drama series Game of Thrones. Freshman series nominated include Stranger Things, The Crown, Westworld and This Is Us.

While a box-office success (grossing $363.1 million), Ryan Reynolds’ R-rated film Deadpool was a surprising nomination. The raunchy superhero flick managed to score nominations for best motion picture, comedy or musical and also gave Reynolds his first Golden Globe nomination, for best actor in a motion picture, comedy or musical. Reynolds' competitors include Colin Farrell (The Lobster), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Jonah Hill (War Dogs). Deadpool takes the honor of being the first live-action superhero movie to be nominated in either of the best motion picture categories (drama and comedy/musical). The animated film The Incredibles was nominated for the same category in 2004. “I was changing a diaper, as I always predicted," Reynolds previously told The Hollywood Reporter of how he learned about his nomination. He further explained: "I thought, ‘When that call comes in, I am going to be staring down the barrel of something nasty.’ We have an 8-week-old and one under 2, so it was a bit of a circus, and I could hear my phone ringing, so I know something really terrible or really great had happened because my phone isn’t that active.”  Elsewhere, Mel Gibson earned a best directing nom for Hacksaw Ridge. The World War II drama marks his first directing role since 2006's Apocalypto.

The Party Starts Now In addition to covering all the action inside the Beverly Hilton, THR will be documenting everything happening at the star-studded parties around town in its party diary and photo gallery. Be sure to visit on Sunday night for the latest winners and news from inside (and outside) the Beverly Hilton.
