- Vanessa Redgrave has added her name to the cast of Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, one of Cannes' hot market titles, which has now started principal photography.
The Oscar-winning British stage and screen icon joins Jamie Bell, Annette Bening and Julie Walters in the adaptation of Peter Turner's memoir, being directed by Paul McGuigan (Sherlock, Lucky Number Slevin).
Kenneth Cranham (War & Peace, Maleficent), Stephen Graham (This is England, Boardwalk Empire), Frances Barber (Mr. Holmes) and Leanne Best (Line of Duty, Undercover) will also appear in the film. James Bond veteran Barbara Broccoli is producing the title with Colin Vaines (Gangs of New York, The Young Victoria), while IM Global is co-financing and has the international distribution rights. The story follows the playful but passionate relationship between Turner, played by Bell, and the eccentric Oscar-winning actress Gloria Grahame. What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the one person she allows herself to turn to for comfort and strength. When Grahame – known for roles in films like The Big Heat, Oklahoma and The Bad and the Beautiful – collapses and refuses medical attention, Turner is forced to take her into his chaotic and often eccentric family home in Liverpool. Shooting has now begun in the north English city and will also take place London and Pinewood Studios. Liverpool was recently used in place of New York for Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
