Roland Emmerich to Direct Sci-Fi Epic 'Moonfall' for Universal. The movie will follow a disgraced astronaut who must save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit

- Independence Day: Resurgence has just started its theatrical run, but director Roland Emmerich has already set his next project.
Universal has acquired Emmerich's spec script Moonfall, which he wrote with 2012 and Resurgence co-writer Harald Kloser, as well as Spencer Cohen (Extinction). In a competitive situation, Universal beat out Sony Pictures for the movie, which Emmerich is on board to direct and Kloser is set to produce. With Moonfall, Emmerich is staying in his sci-fi epic wheelhouse. The movie centers around a disgraced astronaut that must lead a ragtag team as they are called upon to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit. The German director is in theaters this weekend with the sequel to his 1996 sci-fi epic Indpendence Day. The film debuted to $4 million in previews on Thursday night. He is known for action-heavy disaster films like 2012, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down. Last year, he directed the LGBT coming-of-age film Stonewall. Emmerich and Kloser are repped by CAA and Bloom Hergott. Cohen is repped by WME and McKuin Frankel.
