PARIS - U.S. actor, director and producer Robert De Niro has been named jury president of the 64th Cannes Film Festival.
Breaking through with Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets" (1973) and Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather Part II," which won him a best supporting actor U.S. Academy Award, the appointment renews De Niro's longtime relationship with the Cannes festival.
He has attended Cannes for eight films, two of which won its Palme d'Or: Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" in 1976, and, ten years later, with Roland Joffe's "The Mission."
In 1980, De Niro won a best actor Academy Award for "Raging Bull," another Scorsese title.
Inviting De Niro to become jury prexy, the Cannes festival organizers stated Thursday that this was a form of paying tribute to the co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
"As co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival and the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, I have an increased appreciation for the jury, who serve, undertaking an important role in choosing films that are represented in the world of film at its highest level," De Niro said.
He added: "These types of festivals help connect the international film community and have a lasting cultural impact."
De Niro's appointment follows in Cannes' tradition of selecting jurors with strong personalities.
Following Tim Burton (2010), Sean Penn (2009), Quentin Tarantino (2004) and David Lynch (2002), De Niro is the fifth American in the last 10 years to head the fest's main jury, which adjudicates its main Competition Palme d'Or, as well as Grand Prix, Jury Prize, and best actor and actress plaudits, among other kudos.
He is also the third actor to head a Cannes Competition jury since 2002, after France's Isabelle Huppert (2009) and Sean Penn (2008).
Cannes jurors will subsequently be selected by the Cannes Festival's board of directors. The 64th Cannes fest runs May 11-22. De Niro's latest film, "Little Fockers," is in general release.
