Londra, 1962. Ginger e Rosa sono nate il giorno della bomba su Hiroshima e sono cresciute inseparabili in un’epoca di grandi cambiamenti. La politica, le marce antinucleari, le discussioni su sesso, religione e moda le uniscono, ma una crisi affettiva minaccia di dividerle.
IN DETTAGLIO:
Londra, 1962. Ginger (Elle Fanning) e Rosa (Alice Englert), due adolescenti nate il giorno del lancio della bomba atomica a Hiroshima e cresciute con la paura del nucleare, vivono sulla loro pelle i primi effetti della rivoluzione sessuale in corso. Amiche inseparabili da sempre, marinano la scuola, discutono di politica e religione e, soprattutto, sognano di avere un destino meno frustrato delle loro madri casalinghe. Quando però Rosa si innamora di Roland (Alessandro Nivola), il padre di Ginger, la loro amicizia va in frantumi. Il mondo è minacciato dalla Guerra fredda che raggiunge il culmine con la crisi dei missili cubani e Ginger, rimasta improvvisamente sola a combattere contro la deflagrazione della sua famiglia, diventa una fervente attivista del movimento pacifista "Ban the Bomb" mentre Rosa cade vittima delle sue stesse ossessioni sessuali e religiose.
SYNOPSIS:
Two teenage girls living in 1960s London
London, 1962. Two teenage girls - Ginger and Rosa - are inseparable; they play truant together, discuss religion, politics and hairstyles, and dream of lives bigger than their mothers' frustrated domesticity. But, as the Cold War meets the sexual revolution, and the threat of nuclear holocaust escalates, the lifelong friendship of the two girls is shattered - by the clash of desire and the determination to survive.

Elle Fanning gives a lovely performance as an idealistic British teenager caught up in family trauma and the Cuban missile crisis
A lovely, open performance from 14-year-old Elle Fanning, playing a troubled British teenager at the time of the October missile crisis in 1962, lifts this movie from Sally Potter. Despite being a US native, Fanning has an eerily good English accent of the Emma Watson/Hermione Granger type, although like all Americans doing Brit accents she takes it slower than the quick chirrup of the real thing.
Fanning is Ginger and newcomer Alice Englert is her best friend Rosa; they are best friends for ever, and their parents are faintly alarmed at how much time they spend together.
But then Ginger notices that her roguishly handsome and smug leftie dad, played by Alessandro Nivola, seems to be very taken with Rosa, who is in turn simperingly flattered. Fanning shows how Ginger is |

deeply wounded by the double betrayal, and channels her rage and hurt into campaigning for CND, as the world fears incineration by the Cuban missiles.
The older generation in the movie, and the audience, are left to wonder if Ginger's passionate idealism is just a symptom of emotional pain, or if it deserves respect, or if, in some difficult third sense, emotional displacement is partly behind all radical protest. This is a teenage movie that could in other hands have been precious; instead it has delicacy and intelligence. |
