Assunto come general manager della squadra di baseball degli Oakland's Athletics, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) cerca di trovare in un complesso sistema computerizzato d'analisi statistica il modo di trovare i giocatori migliori da mettere sotto contratto e da schierare. Per tornare finalmente a vincere.

Nel 2001, la squadra di baseball degli Oakland Athletics va a rotoli, e il general manager Billy Beane lo sa. Non ci sono soldi e tutti i giocatori migliori stanno passando alle squadre avversarie. Quando incontra Peter Brand, un paffuto nerd neolaureato a Yale che applica i suoi complessi calcoli matematici al sistema del gioco e dell’ingaggio, Billy lo assume senza esitazioni. The story of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players.

Oakland A's GM Billy Beane is handicapped with the lowest salary constraint in baseball. If he ever wants to win the World Series, Billy must find a competitive advantage. Billy is about to turn baseball on its ear when he uses statistical data to analyze and place value on the players he picks for the team.
